The condition is called Arnold-Chiari Malformation.

The cerebral tonsils are herniating into the spinal canal. This causes a build up of cerebral spinal fluid in the brain, pressing the brain down, causing more pressure, causing more herniation. The brain stem become compressed, causing all kinds of lovely problems (heart palpitations, dizziness, difficulty swallowing, regulation of body temperature, etc..) and you can just imagine the headache.

Conquer Chiari is an excellent site for if you want to learn more. And of course, there is always Wikipedia.

Yikes - between the cerebellum & the brain stem - they control all the functions we take for granted (i.e., don't have to think about)! And as a lifelong sufferer of migraines, yes -- I can imagine the headaches! Hope you can get some effective medical treatment/improvement for your condition.

OK - the new question is in honor of the opening of the Atlantic hurricane season (which started early this year with 2 named storms before June 1).

Only 2 Atlantic hurricanes have made landfall on the continental US as Category 5 storms (winds in excess of 157 mph/252 kmph) on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. Can you give the name & year for these 2 hurricanes?

I live in Florida, so that is just not fair...I am recussing myself. However, there are actually 3 Atlantic hurricanes that made landfall in the continental US as Cat 5's. One was before the naming system, though. I say you give bonus points for that one.

Wait... wait... wait.... Hurricanes are interesting, but doesn't anyone else want to play Doctor? I thought maybe we could get up our own surgical team... I mean, other groups get softball teams and bowling leagues, etc. It would be wonderful camaraderie to share an operating theater, wouldn't it? Get together on a Friday night, have a few cocktails, perform a heart transplant or remove a gall bladder. We don't need to try the really difficult stuff like brain surgery. Just little things like kidney transplants or something. Whadda ya say? Huh? Huh?
