People were watching the OJ Simpson car chase instead of DH's singing.

New Question For Today... another two-part question;

This man holds one patent for every three weeks of his life.
1. Who is he?
2. Why is there a large statue and park for him a few miles from my house here in Japan?

Nope. The one I am thinking of has many more patents, and is as American as apple pie.

Hint: He was NOT a very nice guy. In fact , he was a real SOB!

Never mind... I just read the replies and see it was answered.

I think it was on a Wednesday. I remember I had just finished working out and turned the TV on while I stretched. I had no idea what was going on, but was barely paying attention since I was doing my cool down. I'm pretty sure after OJ is when I stumbled on X Files. I remembered thinking I was watching the tail end of a movie and couldn't believe a show was that suspenseful.

I believe it's Thomas Edison and if I recall correctly, he holds more patents than anyone. I grew up in NJ, not far from his lab in West Orange, his house which is in the oldest gated community in the US, Llewellyn Park in W.Orange, and of course 20 min. away from good old Edison, NJ itself.

Tom had the correct answer first, or at least half of it.
It was Thomas Edison. One patent for every three years of his life. Unfortunately, he didn't invent most of the things he patented... His workers did. He just grabbed the glory... and the money.

As for the second half of my question of why there is a statue of him and a park dedicated to him near my house... I doubt anyone will get this one so I'll spill...

Edison tried thousands of different items as filaments when he was trying to perfect the light bulb. One of those that he tried was 'bamboo' from a stand near a neighborhood shrine. The local folk were so thrilled that he chose 'our shrine' to select his bamboo, they dedicated the shrine's park to him and erected a statue! God only knows 'why' he chose that stand of bamboo. It's no different from 90% of the rest of the world's.

Tom... give us a question, please!
