Okay, let's try a multipart question. What spacecraft is currently furthest from Earth? How far away is it right now? And how old were you when it was launched? Oh, and what's for lunch?

I have no idea, but I'll take a stab at the lunch option: I'm thinking Chicken and Hot Peppers from the Vietnamese place down the street, but it's early yet, still time to switch directions on that one.

I was in grammar school (mid 70s) when they launched the Voyager I and II. I think I remember that Voyager II was launched first, but my memory is fuzzy. I also think there was another program that went to Mars even earlier (early 70s), but I can't remember the name.

It is indeed Voyager I which was launched in 1977 (I was a mere lad of 20). In recent years, it overtook the Pioneer I and 2 and Voyager 2 spacecraft as being the furthest from Earth. But it is well past the distance to Pluto by now (afterall, he's Disney World/Land, isn't he?). Any guesses as to how many astronomical units (1 au = mean distance from our sun to Earth) away it is now?

Sorry, lunch was enchiladas suizas and charro beans. Yum.

Hmmm...in September of 1977 I would have been in Mrs. Kennedy's grade 2 class.

Is the answer to the distance question a lot?

Okay, the answer is 119. It's still in communication and sending back data. It's expected to pass into the heliopause (past the solar wind boundary of the solar system) in 2015 and continue transmitting data to us past 2025.

The country where the carving of Jack o'Lanterns originated didn't have pumpkins, so in which country did this tradition originate and what did they carve?

Well Samhain is Gaelic, so was it Ireland? Don't know what they carved - maybe very large potatoes?

The Irish had a custom of carving faces into turnips and placing a burning ember inside to help light their way at night. There is an old legend about an Irishman named Jack who was a cute hoor (a rogue and scam artist), and this Jack tricked the Devil into not accepting his soul into hell. When Jack died God wouldn't let him into heaven, and sent him to hell. However, the Devil honored his word and wouldn't take Jack either, but the Devil gave Jack an ember inside of a carved out turnip to light his way for all of eternity. These carved out turnips were then called Jack of the Lanterns, which was eventually shortened to Jack O'Lanterns. When the Irish came to the U.S. they found that pumpkins worked a lot better than turnips, and this is the history of Jack O'Lanterns.

Nice question. Perhaps a reason why the Irish are often referred to as "Turnip Heads" (ducks and runs for his life...).

We are all used to the common use for Chloroform, but what common household appliance was it used in for many years, though it is only now being phased out?

That's another easy one. We use it all the time to "sedate" chickens before we pop them into the broiler.
