I often think of that quote when I end a sentence with a preposition.

The Report of the Special Committee on Moral Delinquency in Children and Adolescents, better (and more concisely) known as the Mazengarb Report, came out in 1954 in New Zealand, the result of the era's moral panic.

Two incidents triggered the enquiry and its subsequent report. One was a girl who briefly ran away from home, and reappeared with lurid accounts of children riding their bicycles to meet at milk bars (like corner shops/convenience stores) "mostly for s*x purposes".

The other incident was far more serious. It was heavily publicised at the time, but in the 1990s it was in the news again (not just in New Zealand), and in the process gave a substantial boost to several careers (including names most of you would recognise).

What was this notorious case, and why did it reach the news again in the 90s?

Peter Jackson's 1994 movie Heavenly Creatures was based on this case. The movie was a big step in the careers of Jackson and of Kate Winslet, among others.

OK - that was a very strange case of teenagers totally out of control!

Now for something totally different:
The first ATM (automated teller machine) went into operation at a branch of Barclay's Bank in north London in 1967 as a cash dispensing machine. Customers would insert a paper voucher encoded with their PIN and receive money from their accounts. What was used to encode the PIN into the paper vouchers?
