"Shrimp" and "Prawns" are not differentiated by their size. They are both found small and large... They both have "shingles," well, overlapping exoskeleton carpaces.
These sea creatures are both found in all waters, but sometimes more of one than the other. They are both 'farmed.' They both look pink when cooked, both curl up, both have that little black "vein" (that isn't a vein) running the length of them, and can taste almost identical. So what are the two main VISIBLE differences, and the one not visible but used by biologists to classify them as different species? Stitchawl |

I keep telling ya... the most visible differences have to do with the exoskeleton! You can clearly SEE the differences! Stitchawl |

Well, bedtime for me... and still no valid answers. When I wake up I'll post all the pertinent data. Meanwhile, how about someone else coming up with a question?

![]() ![]() O.K... first Mr. Shrimp; ![]() Please note shingle #2 on Mr. Shrimp's back. Note that it overlaps #1 and #3. The easiest practical way to separate true shrimps from true prawns is to examine this second abdominal segment. The second segment of a shrimp overlaps both the first and the third segment, while the second segment of a prawn overlaps only the third segment. They are like house shingles! One over the next, over the next, over the next. ... and now Mr. Prawn together with Mr. Shrimp; ![]() Also clearly visible is the 'bend' in the back of Shrimp. While prawns make a nice smooth curve, shrimp have a distinct (if you look for it) angle to their backs. Still, the easiest to see is that overlapping exoskeleton. Those are the two very visible differences. As said before, one has three pair of pincers and the other has two, but ya gotta get close to see those. Also, the gill structure of each is different. Prawns have branching gills (which puts them in the dendrobranchiates family,) and the shrimp have lamellar gills. Now... isn't this more than you EVER wanted to know about your food? Next question from somebody, please! Stitchawl |

It was only when I read The Lord of the Rings that I learned an emerald is a type of beryl.
Aquamarine is the only other one I know. Hmm, now I have to come up with a question! thinks Back soon. |
