Poor Frank Holmes, languishing in obscurity. Let's see if we can rescue him without resorting to search engines.

You may not have heard of Frank, but you've almost certainly made use of something that he was heavily involved in the development of. What's his claim to fame?

He was indeed born in New Zealand, although purse-lipped he's described as British in some sources. Mind you, back then New Zealanders did tend to think of themselves as British. And he did spend much of his life involved with things British.

The song's a homegrown Kiwi one, by a folk singer, so I'm not surprised you haven't heard it.

OK, trying to narrow this down. Was he involved in the sciences? Agriculture? Manufacturing?

Not agriculture or manufacturing, other than indirectly. But this is a good line of questioning.

And yes, broadly speaking science (as opposed to the arts, for instance).

Obviously Snake is way ahead of me, some knowledge privy to the antipodean crowd, but I'll plow on. The 20s makes me think of communications, but then there's no direct connection to the arts! Oy. How about medicine? Some popular drug like aspirin?

No, it's nothing to do with the arts. And there's no real Antipodean connection, apart from the fact that Frank was born and educated here. It's really a Northern Hemisphere story (there, a small clue).

Northern Hemisphere in the 20s, hmmm. The age of Prohibition here, but Frank was on t'other side of the pond. Sports? But then what do I use that's related to sports (nothing, if I can help it)? And where's the connection to the sciences? I'm stymied.

Is this something I use personally?
