I was thinking sleuth was for foxes, but on further consideration that might be skulk.
A computer programming language was named after a 19th century mathematician who was the child of a poet. Who was the mathematician? |

It can't be Blaise Pascal; he lived in the 17th century.

It looks like the language is Ada, named after Lady Ada Lovelace, daughter of the poet Lord Byron. I'm not sure she was a mathematician. However, she is known as the "first computer programmer."

Falcao is right, it's Ada.
Ada Lovelace was a gifted mathematician (as was her mother), tutored by a Fellow of Cambridge University, among others. An amateur, of course, as were many "gentleman scientists" of the time. Her family history would make a soap opera look tame. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_lovelace Your turn, Falcao. |

Wow thanks, computer science school finally paid off
![]() I hope this is not too obscure, but I'm thinking about an Eastern Roman Emperor who got his nickname after he won a great victory over an ancient people. If you want a first hint: Spoiler:
*** EDIT *** Maybe it is too obscure, so there is a second hint: Spoiler:
If nobody is interested I will give the answer the next time I log-in (i.e. 5/6 hours from now). You can check what time is "now" in the lower part of this post). Last edited by Falcao; 06-02-2011 at 09:09 AM. |

Close, very close, but not yet. Basil I nickname was "Macedonian" because he was born in the theme (province) of Macedonia, not because he defeated the Macedonians.
*** EDIT 14:15 MST *** Here is the answer... Spoiler:
Since LatinandGreek has the closest answer I guess is her turn. Last edited by Falcao; 06-02-2011 at 05:18 PM. |

Well ... Eastern Roman Emperors seem to have killed the thread ....
I'll restart it: Charlotte, NC is receiving a special gift tomorrow from Chartis Insurance company, with an estimated worth of $2.8 million. What is it? |
