It looks like the language is Ada, named after Lady Ada Lovelace, daughter of the poet Lord Byron. I'm not sure she was a mathematician. However, she is known as the "first computer programmer."

Falcao is right, it's Ada.

Ada Lovelace was a gifted mathematician (as was her mother), tutored by a Fellow of Cambridge University, among others. An amateur, of course, as were many "gentleman scientists" of the time. Her family history would make a soap opera look tame.

I hope this is not too obscure, but I'm thinking about an Eastern Roman Emperor who got his nickname after he won a great victory over an ancient people.

Close, very close, but not yet. Basil I nickname was "Macedonian" because he was born in the theme (province) of Macedonia, not because he defeated the Macedonians.
