my first idea was that she was the first woman who sliced a kiwi (the bird), but thats silly ....

was she the first white woman to marry a maori? This was probably shocking in the 19th century, but a crime? Don't know ....

Good guesses! But no.

Kiwis are protected now, but I'm not sure that they were in Minnie's time (edited to add: kiwi gained protection in 1896, which is just after Minnie's time). And interracial marriages have never been a crime in New Zealand.
