So this is the rant and vent thread ....
OK ... here goes.
The story of the past three and a half years ... one long rant and vent: But, first a short introduction ... I am allergic to cats and dogs. Always have been, always will be. During the course of the day I often take up to 16 Benadryl so that I can keep breathing. This is because I like breathing ... very much. Sometime in 1992, while I was living in San Diego (small condo in downtown), ... no actually August 19, 1992 ... I saw a really beat up, sick, scruffy cat down by the pool. Said cat was very friendly and clearly loved people, but was also clearly unwell ... extremely. I asked about the cat and was told that his prior owners had "skipped town in the middle of the night" sometime back and left him behind to fend for himself. Makes perfect sense because we all know how perfectly suited the average house cat is for life in the wild ... especially the wild of a major metopolitan city. I went and purchased a cat carrier, grabbed the cat and took him to the vet. The vet pronounced him as being close to DOA, having cardiomyopathy, feline AIDS, fleas, worms, and Bast knows what else. The vet gave him a week to live. I decided that I could cope with my allergies for that long, and that I would act as a hospice for him ... give him lots of love, food and comfort until he died. He did die ... eventually ... 9 years later. By that time, I had adopted another boy, an AIDS kitty (who had been beaten and shot in the head with a pellet gun), and a girl who had lost a leg to an unfair fight with a car. From 2001 until 2004, more and more injured, sick, and sometimes mentally ill (I know, I know ... how do you tell if a cat is mentally ill?? Trust me, you can tell), cats came to live with me. By the end of 2004 I had 9 cats in a 1276 sq foot condo. It was crowded. Now, there was a limit in the development of 2 pets per unit. However, everyone in the development knew I had 9 cats, and many of them brought new kitties to live with me. No one cared, the cats were fine ... all was right in the kingdom. Then one day, I was walking home from the store and I met a homeless man with a puppy. He was trying to find the puppy a home. The next thing I know, I'm introduing a puppy to 9 cats and watching them come up with interesting methods for canine extermination. That was when I decided to get a larger house with a yard. Now, as it happened, my sister had 20 acres and a house come up for sale next to her 20 acres in a town called Warner Springs, California. So, I decided I would buy that house. However, a single conversation with her husband (the idiot) convinced me that was a bad idea. Essentially, he explained to me that "we" (?) would not want a bunch of animals on my property that were not working animals. "What's all this 'we' crap, White Man??", I thought to myself. Spot decision, no purchase within 100 miles of idiot brother in law. Next day, talking to a client, he suggested that I do what he did ... namely, live in Texas and commute to California. Sounded good to me ... well over 100 miles from idiot brother in law, so, I'm in. I went home that night and started looking for properties. I found the most gob-smackingly beautiful house near Austin, Texas for a price I could afford. Called the realtor and flew out the next day to look at it. While there, I told the realtor the whole saga (allergic, rescued, now love, no room, idiot brother in law), and she said: "Well, there's a limit her to 3 pets per house, but, the development is run by one guy, and if he says it's ok, then it's ok." I wrote her an ernest money check and flew back home. She called me back about a week later and said everything was a go. So, I packed up 9 cats and 2 dogs (because by this time I had taken in a sister of puppy number one was well, and paid to have homeless man's dog spayed) and I drove to Texas. Soon after the move, I spoke with Mr. (Evil) Developer, and he told me that there had been no problem in waiving the rule because "the rule is only so that people's pets won't kill the local wildlife, and since all your cats are indoors only, they really aren't a problem." From 2005 and through 2006 I commuted, mostly by air, but sometimes by car, back and forth 1200 miles each way. It didn't matter, the cats were happy, the dogs were happy and all was right in the kingdom. EXCEPT for the fact that no common area maintenance that had been promised was actually being done by Mr. Developer. So, I began to complain. I was, after all, paying to have common areas maintained, so why should I have to pay a third party to do it or do it myself?? Mr. Developer's only response .... "You are in violation of the rule against having more than 3 pets, and you will be fined $400 for each day you are or have been in violation of this rule." Right .... So, off we go to court. I am suing him for 7.5 million dollars. Hey, by this time I have 20 cats and 2 dogs ... the food bill alone is $3000 every month ... and don't even get me started on the vet bills. One sweet kitty cost me over $10,000 in a single year (brain tumor and brittle diabetes -- treatment was unsuccessfull). Now, this brings me to the meat of the rant. They recently had my first deposition at Mr. (Scumbag) Developer's attorneys office. Mind you, the suit is over whether or not I would have moved out here if I had known there was going to be an issue with my animals, and whether or not I had been given a verbal waiver of the rule ... more issues, but you get the general idea. So, what pithy questions do they ask me?? "Is it true you claim descent from a King of England?" (Yes, Edward III and any kings he could claim descent from ... but what does a miniscule genetic relationship with a long dead English king have to do with anything??) "Have you ever been institutionalized for mental illness?" (No, and that's not to say I'm not mentally ill, but even the craziest coot in the country is entitled to be told the truth.) "Did your mother's first marriage end in death or divorce?" (Oh, ever so screamingly relevant ... I should have anticipated the old "her mother's second husband died" defense to verbal waiver. "Do you REALLY expect us to believe that you would commute 1200 miles for the sake of the comfort of your CATS??" (Yes, I thought we had already established that I was mentally ill ... you dumbass.) "Have you ever been married.??" (Right, there's a big market out there for physically unattractive. old, crazy, cat-ladies as trophy wives. I'm beating them off with a stick. Always have been, even when I was young, physically unattractive and just plain crazy but catless.) So .... here I sit, in an almost 4000 square foot house, a fair drive from Austin, with my work 1200 miles away, involved in a law suit to save the lives of my furry family (because Mr. Asshole Developer wants them either out of town or euthanized), and the real estate market has gone so flat I wouldn't be able to move this house on a bet. Oh, and the price of gas (and thus air fare) going up so fast it's barely cost effective to commute anymore. Ahhhh .... gooood times. Good times. (I'm sorry ... where is the smiley face pointing a gun to its head?? I could use one of those.) ![]() |

Love those ... but how do I use one that isn't on the list?? I know computers back and forth, but I'm new to all this smiley face stuff.
I help very rich people keep all that money and make more. I'm an attorney, but not of the scum sucking variety. I do transactional work only .... so I make certain their business transactions are fair (I'm one of those strange creatures that tries to make the transaction fair for both parties, while still having my client's cash secured nine ways to Sunday), make sure they only pay the taxes they absolutely have to pay, and help them disinherit their drug-addicted, illegitimate children. I used to be in medicine, but I got really tired of being called out of a warm bed in the middle of a blizzard (lived in the Sierra Nevada mountains for a while) to tell some complete moron that, yes, that urine with the color and consistency of runny ketchup (catsup for some of you) has BLOOD in it. As does the fluid I am now coughing up out of my lungs from walking pneumonia. Did you REALLY call me at 4:00 in the morning to have me tell you that?? SERIOUSLY?? May I please go back home and die in peace?? Sorry ... I'm sure there must be a limitation on the number of rants posted in one day. Last edited by RickyMaveety; 06-09-2008 at 12:15 PM. Ricky, do you think that restriction on animals would hold up? Inside your own house? In TEXAS?
I mean, you're actually an attorney, whereas I'm merely someone who had the misfortune to be sued once (not for keeping cats-- I still have my cats), but that sounds weird to me. |

My daughter would really like you, Ricky. She too rescues cats. At the moment she only has three: one was found abandoned in a ditch, and is now very happy and healthy. The second was a kitten abandoned on a local mountain. She's since lost her tail in an accident, but seems to be managing well without it, and has recovered from a couple of months of spine paralysis. We think that she got run over by a car, but can't be sure.
The third was left for a month in an empty flat and found by bailiffs who were repossessing it. He survived by drinking water from the toilet bowl, and is recovering from kidney damage. He's put on some weight and is a slim black cat. My daughter has named him after Nelson Mandela, on account of his unjust imprisonment. My own cat was a rescued animal, but died at the age of 16. |
