Nope, not in Germany, I´m afraid. But hitting my colleague worked fine. He finally made the phone call.
Thanks for the tip anyway

Hey ... I'm twisted up like a pretzel at the moment and on more pain pills than even I feel safe taking.

To top it off, I went over to say "hi" to a neighbor, and got roped into doing an on the spot repair of his PC (which was running slower than molasses in winter because .... it only has 512mb of RAM in it), which meant I had to crawl under a desk, and my back just got more messed up than it was before, and then I missed the UPS delivery person, and of COURSE I need the stuff that was supposed to be delivered today (and won't have it till tomorrow), and NOW I have to go walk the dogs.

No good deed goes unpunished. Soooooo true.

yup.....I spent too much time trying to please followers. Mention the wrong politics or supper menu and 6 followers would drop you. I took it too personal. I've officially deTwitted myself

Oh hell .... I get dropped by at least one person every day. However, I get a few more than I lose most days, so it all evens out.

And .... if I may vent and rant about one more thing today ... Windows installed an automatic update last night. When I got up this morning and turned on the computer ... it looked like all of my documents/pictures/music were gone. POOF!

I'm just glad I'm a true geek-girl. I was able to spot the real problem (Windows had created a phantom user and then pointed all of the "Ricky Maveety" entries to the phantom user account. So, when I clicked on Ricky Maveety's documents, I was directed to the phantom's docs directory, which was empty.

I guess I'm lucky that it only took me about 45 minutes to diagnose and fix. But, really ... it was a rotten start to the day.

From a previous job:

In a power cut: "My computer won't turn on! Why won't my computer turn on?"

A different person came up to the IT dept and asked us when the lifts would be working. When we shrugged and said we had no idea, they berated us, as because lifts have computers in them, they are obviously an IT issue.

In both cases, the people were being serious...

Well, even dealing with my neighbor's PC today (and I really like this guy) ... the conversation went something like this:

Him: It's really SLOW, I think there is something wrong with the router!

Me: If it's taking 5 minutes for a program to load, that's not the router. It has nothing to do with the router.

Him: It's NOT my computer!! I've still got plenty of space on the hard drive.

Me: The hard drive has very little to do with the overall speed of the computer. It's probably the RAM. Now, see, according to this, you only have 512 worth of RAM in this computer. Your printer uses 30 of that just sitting there, your work connection takes another 60 ... again, not even when it's working ... you have 70 processes running in the background, each one is using over 1K ... and that's not even counting Windows XP which requires a fair amount to run well.

Him: But there's plenty of room on my hard drive.

Me: Give me your credit card, I'm popping the RAM out of this thing and ordering you as much as this model will take. And, great, I can't find the model number on this machine ... and the old HP support 800 number has become a "hot singles chat line."

(Much moaning ensues as I climb under the desk, pull apart the computer, take the RAM out to see what I need to order, and then put it all back together.)

I give up. I got next to nothing done today. I've still got the neighbor's dogs to walk, and I'm beat.

Yuk!

RickyMaveety, my best friend is a rent-a-geek (NOT geek squad) by profession, and he's had that same "RAM is not the same as the hard drive" conversation dozens of times with his clients.
