At the moment epub support is far from being mature enough. Do you have any requirements for web2epub? For me, it will just be a thin wrapper that calls web2disk and then html2epub (indeed you can actually do that from bookit now rather than waiting for web2epub).

Not really, if the command line parameters are substantially similar to web2lrf it should be a breeze. Thanks.

Edit to add:

Hmm, you know, I didn't know there was a web2disk utility. That opens up a bunch of ideas.

Indeed, web2lrf is really a wrapper around web2disk+html2lrf (all of calibre is designed in a similar modular fashion).

Actually web2lrf contains a lot of legacy code to support the fetching of "Profiles" (the precursor to the current recipes for news sites). But the functionality you use is just web2disk + html2lrf

The New Editor Feature

Hi Beowulf573...

Hey, I just moved to the Mac, and was happy to rapidly get going making ebooks from web pages using the Mac version of Bookit and Calibre.

I'm really intrigued by the editor feature, but I'm not quite sure how to use it. I've brought it up various ways, but it's empty. What are the steps to bring a potential ebook into the editor?

You can drag and drop elemtns from a web page onto the editor, or cut and paste into it. I have code that will copy the current selection to the editor when you open it, but haven't done a build with it yet.

I'm almost caught up with work after the hurricane. I'm at a small software company and we lost a week of work, which we can't really afford, so I've been putting in a lot of hours catching up. If today goes well I should be able to dedicate a few hours each week back to the plugin.

Sorry to Hear

Hi BeoWulf,

Thanks for the info (and again, for the plugin!).

Sorry to hear about the trouble there. Here's hoping your business is back on its feet soon. :-)

Thanks, I seem to have finally caught up with things. I've added a few small things today during lunch and we enough accumulate to warrant a new release I'll put something out.

Firefox 2.x vs 3.x

Are they many folks still using 2.x out there? I'm looking at adding a few new features such as a progress indicator window which would be difficult for me to add under 2.x but significantly easier under 3.x. However, if most folks are still using the older browser I don't want to force an upgrade.

However, the 2.x branch will reach end of life at the end of the year.

Love the Editor!

Hey BeoWulf...

The editor is fantastic!

One nice use for that is if you have a PDF manual that is 300 pages long, and you just want to read parts of several sections. Copy, paste, copy, paste, reformat in the editor to a nice text size, voila! Instant, custom e-book I can read away from my computer, with only what I need in it! Lovin' it.

Adding icon to the context menu?

Hi, Beowulf,

I wonder whether it is possible to add an icon (just like the one shown on the status bar) to 'Selection to ebook' command in the context menu.
Maybe it is just me but sometimes I have to look through the context menus carefully to find this command. I think it will be easier if the menu has an icon in front.

Thanks for the excellent plugin. I am using this program everyday.

Good idea, it looks possible and I added it to my todo list. It shouldn't be that hard.

Version 0.4.4 is out.
  • File save/load added to editor
  • Icon added to context and tools menu
  • Add current selection to editor when opened

I'm working on restructuring the code to provide progress information and a list window to the similar to the download window. This may take a while to get working. I'm also restructuring the code so html2epub can be called instead of html2lrf.
