The Road is a short and quick read for the most part.

Forgive me, Kenny; It's short -- granted -- but it is not quick. *The Road* is one of those books that haunts you for a long, long time. The warts-n-all possibilities it presents, the very realism -- no glisten -- is not something that you soon get over. Neil

Didn't mean that at all Neal just that short page number wise.

I know that the density of the prose at some points had me re-reading paragraphs as well. It is written more in the manner of poetry than prose in many ways. That is part of the reason I enjoyed it so much!

It's those that stick with you and make you think that make for the great works of literature. -- Dhalgren for example, I think that book is forever in my head and never that far from consciousness.

Agree 110% on the poetry, Kenny. But the story overrides the elegance of the words. I'm sure you'll agree that this is one superb piece of writing. Not a line is wasted. No names, No pack drill. No frills. No promises. Just as it comes; straight from the rushing pen of one of the greatest word artists we're lucky enough to have sumbled across. Neil

I read the excerpt I yesterday, and I think I would love the language. Not a book to read quickly. I've handled the printed version, and I wouldn't say it seems a particularly short book. A fairly good "book-sized" book, not a fantasy-epic, 2 kg, tome, not long enough to get lost in, just the size for a good, concentrated reading experience.

Anyway, I look forward to it.

It sucks you in and won't let go because it's just so exciting. And still it want to do something more.

This is better than Dan Brown or Stieg Larsson in terms of suspense and on every other level they are the butt of the joke.

I am staying clear of Mr. Brown and Hr. Larsson, but you made me want to try Dostojevkij - but given he's Russion, I wondered if I shouldn't try a Danish translation rather than an English? It would depend on the quality of the translation though, but it does seem awkward to read a translation into something that is after all a secondary language of mine.

I suppose I could set aside Infinite Jest for a brief while (I've already spent a month with it) to read The Road. From the sounds of things, it may be just the change of pace I need right now. I'll keep an eye out for the discussion thread in a few weeks' time.

Just started 'Yellow Blue Tibia' by Adam Roberts.
We recently had the awarding of a big fiction prize (the Booker), and the judges were rather sniffy about SF - but Kim Stanley Robinson said 'Tibia' should have won the thing!

I don't think it's available as an ebook, but it got me interested enough to borrow the pbook from my local library.

On advice here, reading Margaret Atwood's *Oryx and Crake* before getting into her recent follow-up, *Year of the Flood*. And I'm glad I decided to do this -- *Oryx and Crake* is a beautiful piece of work that I may well not have gone to had I Tackled *Year of the Flood* first. Cheers and thanks. Neil
