You could however, put some foam around the battery to prevent it making sound when shaking the reader. Also test your battery to see if it charges well.
I would not know if a larger capacity battery would be charged fully on the reader.
if you put foam around the battery, you might as well just use the normal sized battery and the battery try. You'd use up any space for a larger capacity battery.

Obviously you'd have to use a battery with the same voltage (1 cell LiPo,) but there's no reason one with more mah wouldn't work and last longer. This is, of course, a hack. Please don't do it if you're not used to hacking your personal electronics, I've never had a laptop, a gps, or a cell phone I haven't altered in some way.

I thought that circuit that is responsible for charging, overcharging/over-discharging of the battery is integrated into the battery. Reader is just aware of what the battery is reporting back?
On 2 thread batteries it is impossible for any hardware to be on the battery.
It must be part of the reader's hardware.

Otherwise the battery would have at least 3 leads like with cellphones or more like with laptops.

So, no one knows what it costs to have Sony replace the battery? I would be amazed with all the PRS users here that there is not someone who has had to do it. Having to pay $100 bucks, or something like that, would KILL any chance of me ever buying one of these.

If you think about it, it's a good thing, because not a lot of people need to get them replaced. If you are curious, give Sony a call. They should tell you.

you need 2 channels for charging and using the battery (positive, and negative),and at least one channel for data transfer.
At this point most hardware does not support sending data over the line used for the battery, I guess since that would mean that without the battery having remnant charge, the controller would be dead, and therefor the battery would not be able to charge; but that's only an estimation.

Most cellphones have 2 leads, and the third is the data channel to the controller.

After the battery change I got ten days and about 700 pages before battery died. Beats the two days I was getting before the swap. Sometime a lithium battery will do better after it's been cycled a few times. I'll post again if there's a significant change.

Well the 700 pages you mention, 10 days?
That's about what I'm getting!
The trick lies in finding the right battery. A higher capacity battery (eg a 2500mah one) does not always mean a longer battery life. It generally means you can have a bigger powerdraw for a short time, without the battery being over-ballasted.

The trick is to find a high quality battery, often made in Japan, not china or korea!

I have bought a 7200mAh 11V extended battery from china for my laptop. The first 3 charges it truely had more juice (upto 6 hours). Now, it has the same amount as Sony's original 4400mAh battery, though both are used as much as the other!

Eight months later I'm back to two-day battery life. This battery didn't last as long as the original. Probably won't change it again, planning on a new ebook reader soon.

Hmm, no better batteries on the market yet? My 2-year-old 505 is definitely having battery issues, have to charge every couple of days and went completely dead in 50 degree (F) weather. Time to take the plunge and service it myself.

PRS-505 Battery Cost

Hey Folks-

First post to ANY blog EVER. I just talked to Sony - their replacement battery is $70 plus shipping. I told the rep I wanted to do more shopping and he offered to see if his "supervisor" would waive the shipping. After reading the info here I'm grateful I joined this forum as it appears there are many better options. Thanks!

I just paid $18 last week, including shipping, buying from one of the E-bay sellers.
