this is a pretty cool teaser trailer for the movie with Whatney introducing the crew to the folks back on earth. I like the "live tweets" in the bottom right, haha.

Err...bottom left, maybe?
(Seriously, some people can't tell Mars from Uranus....) My favorite: "Vogel must be the synthetic, right?" Ridley Scott making a Ridley Scott reference! I might set a personal record for movies seen in the the theater this year! Last edited by ApK; 06-08-2015 at 10:57 AM. |

Same with the audiobook the German crew member cannot pronounce German words.

The trailer looks awesome. I'm excited!*
The screenplay is by Drew Goddard. I didn't recognize the name, so I looked him up. He's been responsible from some pretty darn good TV and movies, so I have high hopes. ApK *Even knowing the first rule of movie marketing: If you only have 30 seconds of decent footage in your whole film, put it all in the trailer. Last edited by ApK; 06-08-2015 at 04:32 PM. |

Once again Randall Munroe has done an excellent job in distilling things down:

My faith in humanity is at least a wee bit bolstered by the runaway success of a work of such hard science fiction. Granted, it's also competency porn which has been proven to sell in spades, but it's maybe reasonable to expect extreme acts of competency from the handful of people humanity opts to launch into space.

I know my question does not really belongs in this thread but it is a book specific / reader problem. I have problems to read The Martian (epub) with Mooreader pro. All images appear twice The maps for example two times the same. In Montano everything is OK. I have this problem with NO other book.
Anyone similar experience and perhaps a solution for Moonreader? Again apologize fort the 1/2 OT. Last edited by Thomas_AR; 06-11-2015 at 11:16 PM. |

I've never heard that term before. But it is a perfect description of the kind of tv show writing I can't stand. Where the lead character always makes the right call, always knows knows better than the other cops or doctors or whatever he is, always wins the bet.
Think Gibbs on NCIS, or, if I remember correctly, The Stainless Steel Rat, though I read it decades ago and have tried to forget it. And the worst, the hardcore xxx competency porn, is when the writers can only manage to make the guy seem so super competent by making everyone else around him totally incompetent--his peers, his boss, everyone in his profession. The Martian, on the other hand, is competency literature! Watney's competency is earned through education, training and hard work. It doesn't always work out and he occasionally screws thing up, and when it does work, we see how and why, not just 'Im the hero, and my gut tells me all your evidence is wrong.' My number finally came up at my e-library and I couldn't put it down. Great book. Got my wife logged in to my overdrive acct and she's reading it now. Looking forward to the movie.

I have to admit, I'm still talking this book up to friends who are readers. I'm almost afraid about seeing the movie, because usually if I really love a book, I can't stand the movie.

Having just completed my reading, I can tell you to avoid Ghost Fleet. Even though the publisher's blurbs read like "Ripped from tomorrow's headlines!" it's not so good. Basic tech errors made it less credible than The Martian. Well, to me, at least. YMMV.
