They'd presumably need to go down the road that other "independents" like Bookeen have done and license ADE. That's why it's much easier for such companies to produce generic Android devices, despite their limitations as reading devices.

You are not really independent if all you do is some ADE. It will just be another generic epub reader.

The last I heard, Adobe were charging about US$70,000 for an ADE licence, which is a big obstacle for a small company, which probably goes at least some way to explain the recent proliferation of Android eInk devices. |

They don't really have a choice,
Either android, or Win CE (which no longer is sold). Windows 10 for phones, might be a better option |

With 5 days left they've raced ahead to $7,126. What could possibly stop them from getting the remaining $212,874?

It's so sad I am almost ashamed to find it amusing. Almost.

Still strange to me that no demo unit has been shown even tho they have supposedly footed the bill for the demo run. I wonder if they will be asking for their money back.

Apparently they should be getting a demo unit by the end of the year and the manufacturer is "ramping up production on the units".
So I guess they're going ahead and refunds are not forthcoming? |

If you think about it, e ink readers are kind of pathetic. Look at the $10 android phone. It packs into a much smaller space a quad core 1.2Ghz cpu, sd slot, microphone, speaker, blue tooth, cell radio, Wi-Fi, camera (crappy camera, but camera nevertheless). This $200 reader does not even have sound. Ok I guess the e-ink screen and front light cost more than the cheap lcd, but really, don't the cheap phones show all the other components cost very little? And the fact that you have a larger form factor to work with makes design and assembly easier.
Eink readers are the smart phones of Soviet era Russian consumer electronics. |
