I am willing to give them a few days but this is real disappointing to say the least. The longer they wait the more returns Walgeens will get. Joe Public doesn't even understand what firmware is so needing this big a firmware update will probably get them lots of returns anyways and the more delays the more returns.

Mine will be here tomorrow, so I can wait too But yes, the average user won't know anything about this...unless Delstar posts something where the user manual is located on their site? Since the user is already directed there for the manual, maybe that's the right place to notify people?

I also wonder how many other people _have_ bought these yet - there's no way to tell, really, but I find it an interesting "coincidence" that the fixes are being readied just when we (mobileread users) are first receiving ours. Maybe ours ARE the first ones out the door, and so Delstar may have some time to get the fixes in place before there's a flood of orders.

(Assuming, as I always include as a caveat, that the fixes actually do resolve the major issues, at least. If after the update there's still no PDF support, no formatting, etc, etc, then I think Delstar will be in for an unhappy few weeks)

Well the more returns Walgreens gets the faster they are gonna lose patience and drop this thing like a hot potato. I mean its bad enough it shipped not supporting any of the promised e-book formats except text but the delays in the firmware update is another nail in the coffin. Like I said I am willing to give it a few days but its VERY bad business to promise the customer something and then not deliver it when promised. I mean first the reader doesn't support formats advertized (strike one) and now the promised firmware hasn't arrived when promised (strike two). One more strike ie a serious delay in the promised firmware or even worse firmware that doesn't fix the reported problems or at least the majority of them and I think its strike three and they are out...

BBB Review of Delstar

http://www.seflorida.bbb.org/Busines...lstar-92019318

"Company Rating F
Our opinion of what this rating means:
We strongly question the company’s reliability for reasons such as that they have failed to respond to complaints, their advertising is grossly misleading, they are not in compliance with the law’s licensing or registration requirements, their complaints contain especially serious allegations, or the company’s industry is known for its fraudulent business practices."

Just FYI: I was able to return my OpenBook to a local Walgreens store, no questions asked.

Good luck to those of you who choose to stick it out in hopes that they get the OpenBook firmware/software corrected. I hope they do. However I think there are way too many issues with the OpenBook to quickly patch them with a firmware upgrade. For one thing, the software they are using to display the various ebook formats apparently is merely stripping out any format tags and rendering what is left in plain text. Delstar really needs to put true rendering software on the OpenBook, or one of the MR geeks needs to figure out how to do that, before the OpenBook will be a true eBook reader. In its present state I feel it is little more than a photo viewer and MP3 player. The LCD screen looks good and the hardware definitely has potential, but there is a lot of work that needs to be done.

Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained, as Ben said. I think it was worth the gamble, and since Walgreens will refund all but the inexpensive shipping fee, nothing lossed.

Just out of curiosity, I went to the BBB site:

Quote:
Our records indicate the company failed to respond to the one complaint the Bureau brought to its attention.
So this is based on one complaint, which Delstar didn't answer - I know my first worry was that maybe they'd had lots of complaints against them, but that's not apparently the case. Maybe it's not as bad, then, as it appears at first glance.

Those margins have been modified by the user to show the page numbers clearly. Normally there is no wide right margin with just the page number in it; the page number usually lightly overlaps a couple of characters of the text wherever the normal book page break would be.

I don't even bother increasing the margins to separate out the page number from the book text on my Libre. So it overlaps a couple of the characters every few pages - no biggie for me. I don't even notice it anymore when reading. I would not let that be the deciding factor for choosing or not choosing the Libre.

Ok, well I just got back from Walgreens. They returned the money no questions asked. This Delstar outfit seems pretty shady and I decided not to take chances. Even if they do offer a firmware update, what will happen in 6 months when this thing breaks down? The Delstar company probably won't exist by then. This Delstar seems like a fly by night outfit. They haven't even answered my e-mail to them. How do they know I am on these forums? I figured return it now while I can. I am just going to spend the extra 79 bucks and get myself a Sony PRS-300. No more wasting time with cheap junk. Sorry Delstar, you guys blew it.

I will follow this forum however and see how it pans out for the rest of you.

I pretty much knew delstar was a no name when I went into this. They still have 25 days to fix it up some before walgreens warranty runs out. Not panicking.

Agreed. I'm willing to give it a week or two now that I know returning it won't be a hassle.

Calibre has a list of devices it recognizes, I doubt this one is on the list, but you could still copy books to a mounted drive (which I presume the reader would connect as when connected by usb)

The AVI file will not play in any player. It has no file extension so I added .avi - still no luck. Same thing with the 3172010 fm Delstar.zip file. When downloaded there is no file extension. I added .zip and see an .img file but without watching the video, who know what we're supposed to do.

I was able to get the video to play. Download it, add .avi extension. If it won't play, you can install this codex and it will play. http://sites.google.com/site/icmxvid/
