I also saw a reference to /mnt/us/system/release_notes and /etc/releasenotes_url.txt in the PW2 5.7.2 firmware, by dumping `strings usr/bin/otav3`.
As well as threats to abort the update download -- those release notes might be needed to find the availability of updates. Possibly some more things that can be modified or locked to interfere with the OTA sensing capabilities? |

![]() EDIT: Hmm... I tried to give you a nice number pattern, but it is much higher now. Somebody else must have given you a big karma bump just to mess with me (or I messed up myself). Oh well, you have a lot more karma than you did a moment before. Now you can give more too... ![]() Last edited by geekmaster; 07-07-2016 at 02:19 PM. |

We can turn radio off (set airplane mode) automagically with lipc commands if we sense an impending update (perhaps a KUAL extension than launches a cron job or something).

The update blocking becomes more important because of Step 7.
I tell people how to choose any firmware version available for their model. If they load anything other than 'most recent' I am sure they will want it to stay that way. |

Is this still relevant on current firmwares?
The dir hack with update.bin.tmp.. does still work? |

JB will survive if you do the right things:
1) Switch off Wi-Fi 2) Reboot twice 3) Re-install JB Hotfix. Main idea is to avoid any subsequent combination of upgrade and factory restore without JB hotfix re-install in between. |

I have a Kindle 3 (Wifi + 3G) model with the keyboard (B006), and I cannot prevent the OTA 1 update with 3G. Post installing the extension I did a reboot, locked the back door, confirmed it was locked via the text file, then turned on Wireless connection and once the 3G started up the screen would refresh post update and I would need to re-install MKK to get KUAL working again.
I've tried both methods (never at the same time). 1. Installing with update_backdoorlock_12_k3g_install.bin 2. Copying the directory backdoorlock in the extensions directory. Once 3G starts up the silent update runs. Has something changed with the way Amazon is doing the update? I'm trying to avoid resorting to SSH to edit the hosts file, or opening the unit to remove the 3G module/antenna as I don't know if the Wifi is also blocked with this extension. |
