Any way to save my bookmarks?

Ok, I have a new Sony PRS-505. I bought it this weekend and it is the updated version (1.1.00.18040 was already installed) but I have had it freeze a couple times while trying to read a really large file.

So twice now, it has deleted all of my bookmarks when I had to reset. It also has to go through all of the "pre-loading" nonsense of opening the books for the first time. Very irritating.

On my sony PRS-500, that would happen every once in a while to books that were on it's main memory, but books that were on the SD card would be immune and always retained their bookmarks.

So when I got the PRS-505, I decided to be clever and only read books off of the SD card, but looks like the card is no longer immune. I suppose if I stop messing around and putting on loads of books before I finish reading current books, I'd be fine. But I like to sorta of load up on books that I'm going to read rather than just books I AM reading.

It only seems to happen sometimes when I put on 1300 + pages books, and I try to think ahead and do all the sizing by pushing the size button three times in a row. I do that because I can resize the fonts while I do something else.

I used to do that on my PRS-500 all the time. But this 505 seems to be a little more buggy and crashes a lot when I do that.

ANYWAY, is there a way that i can regularly save some sort of file that has all my bookmark info? Like the book directory file or something?

On my Kindle it's easy because every book that has been opened makes some sort of bookmark file. So I would just back-up that folder..

I believe that if you sync it with the PC software it'll make a more durable form of the bookmarks file that will survive resetting, that's what seems to happen with the 500, but I don't have a 505, so I don't have any direct experience with it.

Hmm, I'm on an older mac and no current version of Windows. So that sucks. It's worked well with Calibre and also using drag and drop. Maybe I'll just stop loading it up so much and stick to just a few books.

On the other hand, the one of the advantages of having an e-book reader is carrying a small library of books, so not sure if I should return it or not.

Is it just me or does it seem just a little buggier than the 500? I rarely had problems with my 500. That thing was a workhorse. I like how my .epub books work on the 505 and it's so easy to create lrf. books on a mac using Calibre that I have been floating between this and my Kindle...

Seems to me that most folks have commented that if anything the 505 is more stable than the 500 ....

But then most folks also seem to eventually settle on not carrying the entire Library of Congress around with them.

I think bookmarks and layout info are saved when you connect the USB cable.

Oh I hear you. I read a lot of technical books and bookmark them so I can re-reference them. Also use them for good quotes.

Anyhow I do not know of a good way to save them. My experience is even thougth sony Connect does transfer the bookmarks you will lose them on the resync. A quick look in the Sony CONNECT software does not show how the bookmarks are kept.

this is how you make sure your bookmarks stay saved:

after making bookmarks in your books, then turn off the reader completely, not just in standby with the slider thing. it has to do a full shut down. i don't know why its made this way, but it only writes then saves the bookmarks to the cache files on internal memory when the device shuts down.
note that if doing a hard reset, there's a risk of losing all bookmark history altogether in some cases.
i noticed that some lrf files tend to crash and reset the reader, losing the bookmarks made since the last full shutdown, so a good idea is to fully power down the device after making several bookmarks or so just to stay safe and conserve battery power.

hope that helps. i know what a pain it is to lose those bookmarks. i've been using this method and it always works.

cheers.
