Unhappy My PRS-505 won't switch on..

I've had my PRS-505 for abut 4 weeks and have been using it regularly. However, after each use I have been careful to switch it off completely using the Device Shutdown option to maintain battery. Last night when I was using it, the battery showed as full, however today it won't switch on. I've had it on the USB power charger for 1.5 hours and have just changed to a mains charger following advice on other threads. Am really not happy with the Sony support suggestion that the battery is dead and needs replacing - any advice gratefully given! The red light isn't showing.. my eReader seems dead!

Let it charge overnight and then try it again.

I've had my 505 for almost a year and have only done a full shutdown once. I just toggle the power switch to disable the screen between reading sessions. As far as I can tell, it doesn't hurt the battery.

I have exactly the same problem.

It seems many others do to. Seems to be a fault in design - I have had it around 6 months only.

Charging is not working.

I cannot return as I bought it off ebay.

Anyone want to buy a very expensive paperweight?

Is there a way for me manually to change the battery?

I don't think "many others" have this problem - I don't recall anyone reporting it before this thread.
If the red light is not showing then something is wrong. Have you checked that the charger actually works? (E.g. with a multimeter or by connecting it to a PSP) Also, try pressing reset and turning it on again.

I had just used the charger to charge my PSP -it works.

You don't think many others have had similar problems?
Here is (not all) a list:

Thanks for the reset and turning it on tip. I believe you are the one that worked out that doing it 10 times could work.

Mine was dead while doing that with the charger in. In my case I unplugged the charger and then did USB connection then reset and power and it worked!

Thanks for your help. Perhaps just doing it many times worked.

I'm glad you got it working.
However, all of the threads you're quoting are about boot problems/hang ups, not "can't turn it on at all" issue like reported by KiwiJen.

Correct - I don't think resetting will help, considering I can't get it to switch on at all. I have tried leaving it all night on a mains charger - not one for PSP but one designed for a ZEN mp3, does the type of mains charger matter as long as it fits the socket?

Am now going to leave it in the PC with sleep/screensaver mode disabled and if that doesn't work then it's back to Waterstones we will go, for a replacement or a full refund - I refuse to send a 3 week old gadget back for service.
Thanks all

Hmm, try resetting it anyway, it have have hung up on a blank page, but you are right that no lights indicates something else is probably wrong.

It's unlikely that it has hung on a blank page as I had done a full shutdown the night before, but I will try.
Best way to reset - is that a pin in the hole in the back?

Miracles of miracles - pressing the reset button while it is on the USB charger has brought back the red light!!!!! Am very pleased.. now just need to wait for the charging symbol to come back and I'll be ecstatic! Assume that will take about 40 mins as per manual..

The screenblank at the end of the shutdown could be described as a blank page , maybe it managed to hang there somehow.

Ahh well the important thing is that it seems to be working now. You will soon know when it's working.

In fact given the time... Did it work?

My argument is that these in some cases are one and the same. That the reader is in fact OFF whether it is showing a screen or not is not relevant if it crashes due to the way the screen works.

Kiwijen - Same result as me. RESET while using wall charger does not work but while USB charging does - this brings back the red light. So if red light does not work then charge 3 hours on the wall charger then disconnect that and charge on USB and reset, problem solved.

Point - my reader was fixed the same way as kiwijen with the shut down screen showing in my case but not kiwijen's- same problem same fix regardless of what the screen shows.

From the links I put it it seems to be very common IMHO.

At the very least this is another important thing to know before trying something more drastic. I hope this knowledge helps others.

Is it a mini-USB charger? If so, that won't work. To charge over USB, the Reader has to be connected to a real PC. The PSP charger uses the round barrel-type connector (the one labeled "DC IN" here).

Hi KiwiJen,

Sony has given you a suggestion to replace the battery because it is dead. But you aren't satisfied with the suggestion.
Then Check your battery or charger manually step by step.
Sometimes, charger shows that the charging continues but still your battery remains uncharged.
So, your charger may be not working properly.
Please, check it again.
Try this one. You may be get the proper output.

I've just had exactly this problem - suggesting it's really not just one or two - and like KiwiJen found that hitting reset whilst the USB is connected did the job.

This has taken me days, so thanks for your advice.
