To BB or not to BB
Best Buy is not that big a deal, except they will probably not impose a restocking fee on the Nook (if you return it within 2 weeks or 45 days, whichever level of membership you have). The Nook is non-starter in this oversaturated ereader market.

Need some info on Costco, though. When will they offer eReaders in their stores (vs. online)? Other than Sony, will the other makers be able to offer "incentives" that cover returns after 90 days? Note the iPod (and presumably iPad) must be returned within 90 days to receive a full refund.

Best Buys are more prevalent than B&N stores many places, so it at least will give the device more visibility in terms of number of locations with display models etc.

There may not be any "profits" to share ... B&N needs to ensure its device drives traffic to its content ... it isn't in the CE business ... but Best Buy is. B&N is likely "losing money" or "subsidizing" the sale of every single Nook sold at Best Buy. BB charges for premium shelf space, advertising space in its flyers, commissions for its reps, and face time in training. Every Nook sold in B&N is probably recorded as a "cost" to B&N ... hoping for longer term loyalty. The real question is: is this enough vs. Sony, Kindle and Apple?

The Nook hasn't yet created a "unique value proposition" in the market ... something that clearly answers: "Why are you here?". There is probably a 6 to 18 month window to do that ... but so far B&N marketing is not staking out any unique turf. If it needs any incentive: Palm Pre.
