PRS-505 in the wild - should I?

I was at a local store today and they still had a PRS-505 on display and the price was $199. I asked if they had any more but that was the last one. I was offered a 10% discount so I said I'd take it. They have the original box and all the stuff is intact.

The rub is, they couldn't get it out of the display holder because it was connected to an alarm so they have to call me when they get someone to figure out how to get it out.

Question: Now that I have time to think about it, I'd like opinions - should I go through with it?

I have had the 505 for over a year now and love it. I sure wouldn't trade it for the 300 or the 600. I was lucky and it is perfect for me.

I tried to get one of the demo 505s at a local Target and they said it had to go back to Sony.

There have been members that have purchased the demo units. Sometimes it has to be taken out of the demo mode. This is the thread I marked for demo mode units. Make sure you use the most current firmware.

Since you have been around the forums, you have probably seen the extras for the 505. You can check out this thread by daffy4u, as she is experimenting with the 505 and customizing it (her Grand Experiment ).

Yes!

The 505 is still one of the top rated ereaders. I really like mine and you'd have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands to get it away from me. It's basically a no frills reader, but it's a workhorse.

I love my 505 and have no problems with it at all. sounds like you're getting a bargain (when they get it out of the alarm!). Having compared it to the newer offerings from Sony, I decided to stick with my 505 - no frills, just good, solid, dependable with excellent screen contrast. I won't release mine even from my cold, dead hands - it's going into the coffin with me!

I think that it is a great deal and that you should go for it. I don't ever part from my 505, and I consider it the best purchase I have ever made.

I've had my 505 for over two years and really like it. And, like Dreams, I would not trade it for either a 300 or 600. Plus I got a really good deal, I went into the Sony Store right after New Years 2008 prepared to pay full price only to have the salesman offer me a window display 505 for 40% off. So, for $170, I walked out of the store 505 in hand.

I think it's a fine purchase if you want it. I don't really care for mine that much, and consider it one of the more overrated readers currently available, but you're getting a decent price for it, so if it's what you want, just go for it.

I think it's a little ridiculous to go to a forum designed for mutual purchase support to ask for "opinions" though. You probably want encouragement, not opinions.

Saw a brand new 505 at a local Best Buy the other day...still asking $299.

Seriously? I wanted to know if people who have a 505 still liked them and if it was a good price. Your judgmental comment did not add any value to this conversation.

Thank you everyone else for your replies. It helped me decide that if/when the store ever gets the 505 out of the display, I will go pick it up. Happy reading!

You are actually naïve enough to believe that a forum dedicated to a device and filled mostly with device purchase justification posts would give you a balanced opinion?

Contrary to your esteemed opinion, my judgmental comment might be the only thing of value in this thread, even if that value is very small.

There are quite a few here that have multiple devices, so I think the question here is more than valid. If you are wondering if us 505 owners are happy, then let me tell you that I am more than happy. I love my Sony.

If display quality is important and you don't need input (annotations) then the 505 is still about the best 6" around, IMO.

Got it! So far so good. I like it a lot better than another brand reader I had - I was lucky enough to be able to sell that one on Amazon so it was almost a wash. Thanks all!

Congratulations! Did you get it for the same price or did they lower it even more?
