Is anyone excited about the movie "Avatar"?

I'm not. I love big budget special effects films but this one is just not talking to me.

I think it's because the first trailer I saw turned me off. Humans going to another planet to wipe out the inhabitants so that they can take over (at least that was my impression). Plus it looks like too much CG.

I'll Netflix it (I can live without the 3-D) but I won't go to the theater.

I was planning to see it because I have been wanting to see a decent 3D movie and was told this one was likely the best out there. It would be nice if the movie was decent in other respects, too, not just the 3D effects. But listening to you and to Moejoe, I think I'm likely to be very disappointed and may wait for more suggestions.

I'd like to see it if only for the technology, but Moejoe's review is enough to scare the crap out of a fertilizer factory!

On the other hand, James Cameron has an established track record. I understand a few folks liked Titanic.

I have capitulated and will see it. because it is 3D and not dreck, and hopefully Cameron pulls it off. I know Moejoe said he didn't like it. I respect his opinion, but there have been some other things movie wise that I know we have very different views of

Well, I rather enjoyed Titanic, too, but I also see he's done the Terminator movies and such. Have just now seen the trailer for Avatar, I think it's likely closer to Terminator than Titanic. Looks like I'll give it a pass.

I was extremely displeased with this film. I hope the future of cinema is not paper thin derivative drivel in CGI. At some level I think Cameron is actually mocking us all. He is showing us how stupid we really are by puppeting these crude caricatures. SEE! This is you! haha. like in blackface.

I've never seen Titanic (it didn't appeal to me either even though I'm a girl and do like mushy movies). I loved Terminator 2.

I don't find the trailers very impressive; but maybe the experience is more convincing and immersive if you watch the film from the beginning.

What gives me qualms is that the story line seems rather trite. If your mind isn't being boggled, it might be bored.

I saw Avatar last night with my daughter and two of her friends, all recent univ. grads, all more movie knowledgeable than me. None of them wanted 3D, all said it made them ill. So, just the regular big screen. The picture filled my glasses frame with nothing left over.

We loved it, blown away by the cinematography and scenery. Of course it is CG, but done so well it does seem natural. I do hate heights, and some scenes certainly triggered the usual response.

As for the story, it is Fern Gully done SciFi. Nothing new there. Maybe it is one of the new myths for our time?

Anyway, aside from the joy of being allowed in public with one's grown-up child and her friends, it was a very enjoyable evening for all of us.

I've heard the movie called "Dances With Smurfs."
I want to see it. I'm just not sure if I want to devote almost three hours to it.

Well, of course a proven track record doesn't guarantee future quality. (Anyone else her get suckered into buying John and Yoko's Wedding Album?)

Full disclosure: I haven't seen Titanic either, but the first Terminator movie is one of my all-time favorite Sci-Fi flicks.

I've seen trailers that didn't do justice to the movies they were hyping, and I've seen lousy films that had great trailers. I'll wait until I've read more reviews.

The 3-D should be great. I've seen Up and Monsters vs. Aliens, and the 3-D blew me away. Kids, this ain't yer father's 3-D!

I saw it Friday in Digital 3d. Well worth seeing. I've give it a 4 out of 5. The story is nothing new, but neither was star wars, eh? The effects are great, the story is good, definitely worth seeing.

I went on Friday to see Avatar. It wasn't offered in 3D at my theater, so I got the 2D version. I went with mixed feelings about whether it was going to live up to its hype. The story is pretty mundane if you take it down to the level of humans bad, invade peaceful planet for $$$$, kill indigenous life for $$$$, a couple of humans get won over by natives and lead natives to victory over evil humans. That story has been told thousands of times.

But I have to admit that I found the movie impressive. The story is a bit more, although not much more, than as described above, but the effects alone are worth going for and, if you are open to a save the environment angle, it does do a good job of demonstrating the interconnectedness of all forms of life.

It would not be on my list of 10 greatest movies of all time, but it would make the top 150. It would make the top 10 for special effects.

I have heard, however, that seeing it in 3D makes a world of difference, but I don't see how that would improve the story any.

I don't know if everyone is aware of this, but the new 3-D technology is completely different from the old, and even requires a special screen on which to display it. That's why not all theaters have the new 3-D movies.

And unlike the old 3-D, the new movies don't seem to cause eye strain.
