Greetings from western New York (USA)

Hi. My name is Marilyn. I am a book-a-holic. And I am a new owner of a Sony PRS-600.

I am retired US Air Force and I live in western New York (USA). I bought the Sony because, for now, I cannot afford the Amazon Kindle. Let me 'splain.

I've been fighting off the urge to buy an e-reader for a long time. An electronic toy (to satisfy the inner new-technology geek) and a book. What's not to like?

Truthfully, I've been fighting off the urge to buy a Kindle since they were introduced. Hey, what can I say; Amazon has great advertising! It's all I've heard about. Never thought of buying anything but the Kindle.

However, I cannot afford to buy books fast enough to keep up with my reading as I'll read anything I find interesting and can get my hands on. Therefore, a couple of years ago, I promised myself that I would stop buying so many books and use the library more. Especially as my town's library is 6 houses down... It's been hard (remember, I'm a book-a-holic - and owning them is just as fun for me as reading them) but I've managed. Another helpful thing is that I can/do like to re-read books.

So, because I know myself, I knew I can't not buy books if I bought a Kindle (you know, the reader with wireless access to seamlessly buy and download books at any time? Yeah, that Kindle). So, I resisted. It was hard, but I was succeeding.

Until I found the Sony (they really should advertise more (better?), by the way) and also discovered that libraries are lending e-books that can be checked out and read on the Sony. A-ha! That's all the incentive I needed. I can continue to use the library and have a nifty new e-reader. Win win! So, I trucked off to my Borders book store and plunked down cash for the PRS-600 (the black one) and the AC adaptor.

Well, I'll probably still buy some books (c'mon, like I can resist buying books completely!), but for the week that I've had the Sony, I've only downloaded free e-books or got them from the library. We'll see how that continues to work. As of this writing, I'm the proud owner of two library cards and I am waiting for the New York Public Library to send me a card. These three library systems and their e-books ought to keep me in reading material for a while. Plus, I hope they'll continue to add to their e-collections.

As for the PRS-600? I like it!! What I like the most is the touch screen and the ability to re-size the font (I'm still learning how to use my bifocals ... so being able to increase the font size w-a-y helps). I also like the fact that when I am reading a 700+ page book, it doesn't way a ton and my thumb doesn't get strained whilst keeping the book open. The reader is the same size regardless. Bottom line: It just works.

Anyway. Apologies for the long-winded introduction. As a rule, I'm usually more of a lurker than a poster. I just wanted to say "Hi" and to thank y'all for some of the tips I've read about the Sony. And, to thank you for any future tips I find (I do a lot of searching on this forum - and have since I discovered you).

Happy reading!

Marilyn

Hello Marilyn, welcome to MobileRead from a former Air Force brat. Good for you, on doing your research and finding the reader that works best for you.

Hang around a spell but not too long because this place is very addicting!

Welcome to MR, Marilyn, from a family of former Air Force members (we have a split between Army and Air Force)!

Don't forget to check out feedbooks and smashwords and happy reading with your new 600.
