Jetbook and Library books? (or Libre + PDB ?)

Any chance the REGULAR JEtbook will be able to read Library books? and Adobe
(I dont know the terms for these yet, sorry, still new)

I bought a Libre, but a little concerned, since all my Bible resources and a ton of scifi books I have are from old Palm (PDB , unprotected)... not supported by Libre.

or might the Libre get PDB support?

Why don't you just convert them with Calibre?

No, not really. It'll ask you when you install what eReader you're using, so you can fill in Jetbook there (this is about sizing and formatting so converted books look nice on the screen, and since Jetbook and Libre have identical screens, and Libre isn't a listed option, just pick Jetbook). After that it will automatically default to ePub as the output format for conversions. You'll also be asked where to have Calibre store eBooks -- remember where you put it.

1) Launch program
2) Click "Add books" and add the PDB you want to convert
3) Select the book you just added and click "Convert E-Books"
4) All the options should already be set, so just OK it.
5) The book will now be located under [path to calibre library]\[author]\[bookname]\[filename].epub

PDF (Adobe Digital Editions DRM)
ePub (Adobe Digital Editions DRM)
Mobi (Mobipocket Reader DRM)

I'd say ePubs are the most common from what I've seen. PDFs are still used a fair bit when it comes to non-fiction titles reliant on their layout. BC Library to Go seems to use PDF for nearly everything though.

And you shouldn't feel stupid for not knowing something. That's why the forum's here after all.

Thanks again,

Yeah, now I'm learning about DRM and non-drm files...

like the only DRM files the JBL allow are from eReader I think.
the EZ reader allows DRM files of ePub and PDF

I know Libre allows DRM but of what? I read Adobe was Library.. so is Adobe another name for DRM ?

Adobe is just the company that made that one type of DRM (they also created the PDF format).

"Adobe Digital Editions" is one particular type of DRM - it's often shortened to just "ADE" around here. It allows you to have 6 computers and 6 other devices (eReaders) registered, and you can view your eBook on any of those devices. You'll need the software called Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer to get your downloads. You can find it here. ADE DRM can exist on both PDF and EPUB files.

eReader DRM is different -- rather than restricting the number of devices you can read your eBook on, it encrypts the book using your name and credit card number, which you must enter to read it. The idea here is that you won't want to give away your card number to friends, and so you won't give them the book. eReader DRM can exist on PDB format files.

Mobipocket is another form of DRM, which I'm not too familiar with. Kindle uses its own variant of Mobipocket DRM. Mobipocket formats are PRC and MOBI.

Jetbook-lite can handle eReader DRM (PDB). Libre can handle ADE DRM (PDF and ePub).

Full list of Libre-supported formats:

PDF (Adobe Digital Edition DRM/non-DRM), TXT, FB2, EPUB (Adobe Digital Edition DRM/non-DRM), MOBI (non-DRM only), PRC (non-DRM only)and RTF electronic book format

New here...and frustrated w/jetbook lite

I'm new, and have looked around the forum for help in using my jetbook lite e-reader.
I have downloaded books from my library and they show up on the adobe digital editions program. I have tried to copy onto my jbl from my digital editions file (in my documents). It seems to transfer, and shows up in the jbl. When I try to open, the file will not open.
Then (through this forum) I added calibre to my programs and have added the books to my device, still I cannot open the books on the jbl.
I have spent hours and hours trying to get books from the adobe digital editions onto my jbl...... can anyone help me?

I do not know how to authorize my jbl for adobe digital editions. In ADE I cannot find any menu or help in transfering the books to the jbl. I have tried all of the above on 2 separate computers, thinking that one may be messed up. But having same problem on both. I have downloaded books through the calibre that I did not get from the library. My main reason for getting this device was to download from the library and be able to read on the jbl. Am I not going to be able to do this because of DMR. Am I missing something? Would really appreciate any help available...

The Jetbook Lite does not support the Adobe Digital Editions Digital Rights Management (ADE DRM) used by libraries. Ectaco says they are working on a firmware update to add ADE DRM to the Jetbook Lite.

I had exactly the same intentions when I got my JBL last month and was bitterly disappointed to find out that it wouldn't handle ebooks from my local library. But there are TONS of public domain books out there so believe me, I've been reading on it every day since the day I got it.

And, as it's been pointed out, they are supposedly working on a firmware upgrade that might fix that.

Could you verify? I see a post in this thread on the Ectaco forum that gives a flat "No" on ADE ePub (agreeing with your first sentence), without mentioning future support (your second sentence). I did some searches and couldn't find such plans.

I emailed Ectaco asking whether they had plans to support Adobe Digital Editions DRM. I got this reply from Val Reaves, Sales Manager, on February 11:

"The jetBook Lite currently supports DRM ebooks in PDB format from Barnes & Noble. Also supported are the following unprotected ebook formats: ePub, Mobi, PRC, RTF, .txt, .pdf, .fb2. We are working on the new version which supports Adobe Digital Editions, but it is not likely to be released in the near future. You will be able to download the updated firmware version absolutely free when it becomes available."
