Is anyone still missing ebooks from Fictionwise?
Way back in January Fictionwise announced that they had been dropped by one of its distributors. As a consequence, some titles would no longer be available for sale or download. Fictionwise promised to replace the affected ebooks with the same title in eReader format.
This past week I've been rebuilding my ebook library (so I can switch to Epub). I noticed while downloading from Fictionwise that I'm still missing 9 ebooks. Is anyone else in this situation? How to check Go to Fictionwise and open your bookshelf. There is a drop-down menu on the left labeled "Display". One of its options is "Download not yet replaced". Select it, and then spress the Save changes button. Last edited by Nate the great; 09-30-2009 at 05:36 PM. |

I'm not, but they didn't have to replace most of my books.
As I recall they said they'd try to replace them, but it wasn't guaranteed. It depended on how the individual publishers responded to the request that they be allowed to do so. |

You didn't expect all the ebooks to be replaced? I did.

I ended up with only one that hasn't been replaced. Not too bad, given the circumstances.

One book - and it turns out it was a DRM'd Adobe PDF I bought by mistake. So no real loss to me.

I had 6 books expiring
1 has been replaced. Of the 5 that haven't been replaced, 1 is still for sale even in Mobipocket format. I wonder why I didn't get a replacement for that book... The other 4 aren't for sale anymore. |

It's been about 2 months now, so I thought I should update this thread.
Fictionwise responded to my email once, and said they were working on it. Since then they have ignored my emails. I'm currently pursuing a BBB complaint against Fictionwise, and this morning I sent an email to B&N customer service. Let's see which one works. It's the principle of the matter, folks. Fictionwise sold me an ebook and then took it back. If they can't replace it then they must refund my money. |

I have 25 that can no longer be downloaded but I have liberated backups on my PC so even though it blows that I can't redownload the ebooks I still have the copies. Since my PC is backed up nightly to my server and continuously to a cloud backup I have redundant copies of all my files.
I agree with you regarding the availability and if I can't get my books I should expect a refund. |

I had 83 that expired and a whopping 34 that weren't replaced. I wrote to Overdrive, the distributor that severed ties with fictionwise, and never heard a peep back.
It's one of the reasons I'm not thrilled with DRM - I lost Adobe books when Amazon shuttered their original ebook store, IMP books when Rocket/RCA/GemStar shut down, and now 34 assorted titles over a retailer's contract dispute. |

I'm sorry, but I don't understand. You downloaded these books, and then you somehow lost them?
I try to keep my ebooks backed up to about 3 different drives, so that if one drive crashes, the others are still extant. |

The ebooks in question are encumbered by DRM. If I want to read them on a new device than I have to download them again.

And swapping out for eReader is not going to cut it especially if the device you are reading them on has no eReader support. So say you have a Gen3, you want Mobipocket, not eReader.
