War and Peace ePub Works in Adobe DE, but not PRS-505

I downloaded WAR AND PEACE in ePub format from manybooks.net here:
http://manybooks.net/titles/tolstoyletext01wrnpc11.html

It displays fine in Adobe DE, but in my PRS-505 it shows as 1 page long. That page shows an exclamation sign and says "Page Error!" in small writing.

Has anybody else had problems with non-DRM'd ePub files that work fine in Adobe Digital Editions but that don't work on the PRS-505? Thanks.

I haven't downloaded that epub version, but Harry T has formatted an lrf version for the Sony.

I've found that some of the manybooks versions aren't as nice. I usually check on MR first before checking anywhere else.

Next, I check feedbooks

http://www.feedbooks.com/

Which I found... http://www.feedbooks.com/book/83

Thanks, dreams. I actually did find a working (and nicely formatted) ePub version at Feedbooks. I currently choose ePub when I can because the page numbers are the same on my PRS-505 and any computer using Adobe Digital Editions.

I had that problem with the 'free' classic books from booksonboard that they gave me for buying my 505 there. I sent them an email about it, and they told me to download the PDF versions instead.

Since they're all PD works anyway, I'd rather get better formatted copies elsewhere.

My guess is that the file is corrupted or not properly formatted. You could report it to manybooks to see if they can fix it, but as it's a free PD work, it's mainly an annoyance, isn't it?

It's probably due to the 300k "book chunk" limit that the Sony has for ePub files. The desktop ADE reader does not have this limitation.

You must be right. Even at Feedbooks, somebody can't use an ePub of Ulysses and a Feedbooks person responds:

Quote:
This ePub file works perfectly well on DE desktop or Stanza though.
The main problem here is that Adobe introduced a limit to the size of a flow on their mobile port of DE for the Sony PRS-505/700. They don't support flows that are > 300k.
On Feedbooks, we follow the structure of the book, and switch to a new flow whenever there's a page break.
In Ulysses, there's hardly any page breaks aside those between the different parts: that's why some of the flows are > 300k.

We could add page breaks in the middle of the text to make sure that the flows are small enough, but for the moment we've decided to keep the original structure of the book rather than using page breaks where they should be none.
I'm sure you already knew all of that, HarryT. Just posting for anybody else who stumbles on this thread.

But surely there aren't chapters even in War and Peace bigger than 300kb? Why not just insert a page break after each chapter?

Or am I misunderstanding the nature of a "book chunk"?

The book chunks are separate xhtml pages that are zipped into the epub format.

If the book isn't broken out into chunks <300k, the Sony can't read it. i.e., if it's just one big document. If the formatter broke out the chapters, no problem. If they didn't - no can read.
