Anyone els having issues with Calibre and the PRS 700??!!

Hi!
I am a noobii! but i have been seeing all the helpful info this forum provides since i was just thinking about getting an ereader. I chose the PRS700 and i've had it for a week (I love it, and honestly the glare isn't that serious! just like a book you can change the angle and badaboom!)
Any way, my issue is this:
I synced my reader to the ebook software it comes with... ok i dont like it bc of many things but the main issue is i cannot edit author information right on it like on itunes (GRRRRRRR)! So then I tried calibre; and when i did and went back to see the books on my reader it had messed up all the titles and author names! SO i had to delete and reinstall my books in the sony reader? any suggestions?

thanx!!

i can't help you with the sony library software because i don't use it at all, but i do use calibre with my 700. since i use it exclusively i've never had any compatibility issues, but i am pretty fastidious about making sure the meta-data is correct so usually i add books one at a time and edit the meta-data by hand (keyboard shortcut E, or just double click on the field in the library view ; you can also use ctrl click or shift click to select several books and batch edit the meta data ; this is good for adding authors, or series name, or tags to create collections).

what problem exactly did you have ?

Keep in mind, calibre can't edit metadata if you are buying books from the Sony books store.

Correct. Unless Kovid has gone and surprised me with a recent update again.

It also can't edit metadata DRMed mobi books.

BOb

(Yet another reason DRM sucks. So many threads where people have issues is due to DRM.)

Thank you; for your replies!
I still use the sont ebook library because of the 100 free books i get. And i tried editing the meta data on caliber and it did not give me that option. SO im guessing i have DRM'ed books? is that my problem? but why would it change the meta data of the books already in my reader?

p.s. it only did that when i added a couple of news feeds

Sony books messed with my meta data!! HELP!

Yes me too!!! The opposite way around though, I think.
I installed Calibre fixed the meta data of my PDF books, even adding bookcovers. This took several hours and looked GREAT and worked just like iTunes. I loaded onto my reader and was amazed..... it even put my books into collections. But was I satisfied? Oh no. I just HAD to go over to the Sony bookstore to get my 100 free books, just because I'm not a USA resident and wanted to see if it could be done. Even though I was advised not to bother and knew I could get them anywhere, I still did.
Breezed through registering my account and reader etc. but then the rest took forever, I finally did manage to download some of the free books although navigation on the Sony connect site is dismal, and downloads stopped twice.
Finally finished and very pleased with myself I disconnected only to find that my previously Calibre loaded books were all messed up. The old incorrect meta data once more displayed.
So I deleted the books, leaving only the Sony books. Re-added them again, and still the same.

What do I do?? How can I fix this problem? Is there anyway around this, does anyone know? I don't mind deleting the Sony books and software and sticking with Calibre, if that will fix the problem.

THere is a reformat device option in the Settings/System menu of the 505. Reformat it. Re load with claibre. Delete the Sony software and we will never speak of this again.

You can use the 100 free books with Calibre. But, you won't be able to edit the meta data. I don't even think (could be wrong) calibre can read it's metadata.

That said, you can d/l the same titles from here for free since all those books are in the public domain. They are freely available anyway. And, the ones here are usually (always) formatted better.

Take a look at MobileRead's own free library of public domain titles. Between MobileRead, Feedbooks.com and Manybooks.net, I bet you'll find most if not all of the free books you git from Sony. They will have better formatting and metadata that isn't all screwy.

OK, update! I followed Pilotbob's suggestion and deleted my Sony software off the PC. I also reset my reader, thereby losing all Sony's books, (never mind I can get them here at Mobileread) and re-loaded my PDF books using Calibre. I still had trouble with metadata, so following someone's advice on another thread, I used 'A-PDF INFO changer' (which is a free download) to fix the metadata.
So everything is working well now, books are correctly named etc. However - some book covers aren't sticking during the transfer. No big deal really but I like everything to be nice and pretty and neat, and I like the look of the book covers. Any ideas?
