Ghosting got worse in firmware 5.18.1
After I updated my Kindle 11th (2024) to version 5.18.1, I noticed that the screen shows more ghosting than in the previous version, 5.17.1.0.4. I don't know if the culprit is actually the new firmware, but the device definitely didn't have this problem before I updated.
Fortunately, I still have KOReader installed and, strangely, this problem doesn't affect the books I read on it. I recorded two slow-motion videos to demonstrate it better, although the effect is more visible in person. The first video shows how the Kindle, in the standard interface, deals with the remnants of the previous page. The second video shows how the screen handled these remnants before the firmware update. The letters sort of "fade in and out"; with the naked eye, you can still see a little, but not as much as in the first video. As I said, this problem doesn't occur when I use KOReader, so I recorded the second video - this is how the Kindle behaved before the update. Or is KOReader working its magic? Or maybe I'm going crazy. ![]() Video 1 https://imgur.com/a/uQIxPYX Video 2 https://imgur.com/a/xk5aMZe |

It's also visible, but it's more difficult to capture with the cell phone camera. As I said, for some reason this problem doesn't occur with KOReader.

I got an 11th Paperwhite and just tried the new firmware. I have a similar ghosting, especially in pictures.
You might want to report the problem to kindle-feedback@amazon.com, so they see that several people have the problem and can fix it. I already did it. |

Yeah, seems like messed up waveforms, thanks Amazon.
Hopefully for us, KOReader’s approach to framebuffer handling is way saner via fbink, thanks @NiLuJe ![]() |

I read a lot outside in the summer (30°C+), and I'm pretty sure ghosting intensifies with heat. It's got nothing to do with much brighter sunlight, as the same isn't observed when reading outside in lower temperatures. On my old readers, it's even very apparent that ghosting increases as they heat up, after they're brought outside.
It doesn't explain why it's ghosts in one reading program and not in the other, though. But it could explain why some people are not experiencing any. It's still cold season for northern hemisphere. Right now, all my readers exhibit little to no ghosting. Last edited by jackm8; 04-01-2025 at 06:30 PM. |
