Questionable prices on Onyx covers

I have a Poke3, Poke5 and "Go6" (a/k/a Poke6). Each was bought as a package with the matching dark cover. The Poke3 is not magnetic. You can see that the current prices for the Poke5 and Go6 covers are $25 and $40 respectively.

Since I have converted both my Poke5 and Go6 covers to be "backless" and have fine-tuned the device internal magnets I can say with authority that these two covers are identical.

So where does Onyx get off scalping $40 for the "new" cover?

It's glued on. I cut the back of the cover down to a 1/2" stub. Besides the weight of the 90% of the back cover, I save 13 magnets in the back cover and 15 magnets inside the device. This also cuts down on your device attracting everything. The front closes just as securely as before and sleep works (obviously).

cost of the Note Max's keyboard cover was $150 plus a stupid extra amount for shipping from Hong Kong, but they're also the only game in town for this so I sucked it up and paid. sigh. gets here within 14 days.

Ok, well, that's the keyboard one. That's pretty specific.

Although some would, I would never have an ereader without a front flap/cover. Even if it were just cloth on cardboard and a gaffer's tape hinge.

I've deconstructed the Poke5/Go6 cover and have a CAD (DXF) file of the front/back. It's 1 mm acrylic with cutouts for magnets. You could cover it with adhesive acrylic for a colorful cover. You can reuse the magnets in the stock cover or buy new ones if you don't have a cover. The plan was actually to make a transparent cover. People who like putting book covers as sleep screens might like that. The front magnets are not actually in the optimal place, but by a bit of rearranging you can make it so that all the magnets are on the bezel and not the screen. A bit of black spray paint on the magnets before laminating would make the cover less conspicuous. You could use colored translucent material too, either the acrylic or the laminate layer.

I used to have access to a laser cutter and it would have taken me less time to make this than a cup of coffee. Now I have to order it and have it shipped.

There are lots of way cheaper 3rd party covers for Boox Go 6 + Go7 devices on Aliexpress. They are/work exactly the same. The original covers are overpriced, but so are original Kobo covers.

Yeah, the $5 ones are identical. They have some silly beefy leather ones that are "window" style and they even have a cutout for the nonexistent "home" button.

OTOH, if you order your device with the "free" accessories, although not free, the price is reasonable.

This is how I got mine. Once I had put it on, I suddenly remembered how much I am not into friendly black and ordered a fun one from Aliexpress.
