dictionary settings & profiles

Hi all, I'm trying to create different profiles for different languages whereby the active dictionaries on each profile only pertain to the specific profile language. The problem is that every change I make to the selected dictionaries seems to be a master setting that applies across all of the profiles.

I'm not sure if I'm actually doing something wrong here or if its a bug or oversight in the software. This is pretty critical to my use of the software as I have a lot of dictionaries for interrelated languages I really need to be able to sandbox that so that I only have the correct dictionaries active for the correct languages.

In addition I'd like to keep the flashcards separate for each language as well, I was hoping the profile thing would do that but I can't seem to wrap my head around it.

Sorry if these are stupid questions I'm new to the software and honestly couldn't find anything specific in the manual.

I would really appreciate if someone can help me wrap my head around this, thanks

"Available dictionaries" is a general setting (upper menu, Search - Dictionary settings - Manage dictionaries).
"Preferred dictionaries" is saved per document (Dict window - tap on the title).

There are no actions (for profiles) for these settings.

Thanks, do you (or anyone else) know if its possible to have multiple installations or copies of koreader on the 1 device, so basically each copy or installation would be sandboxed from the other based on language, and I just launch the appropriate one when I boot up the device. Thanks

Assuming you're using a Kobo with KFMon, that's easy. Connect your Kobo via USB under Nickel, and then:

1. Copy your entire .adds/koreader folder to a new folder, like .adds/koreader-jp or whatever you'd like to use for your desired language and only keep the dictionaries you need in its data/dict subfolder.
2. In the base folder, copy the koreader.png icon to koreader-jp.png and edit it so you can easily recognize it (e.g., overlay a "JP" text with an image editor).
3. In the .adds/kfmon/config folder, copy your koreader.ini to koreader-jp.ini, then open it and edit the filename to the icon (koreader-jp.png), the path to the launch script (/mnt/onboard/.adds/koreader-jp/koreader.sh), the label (e.g., KOReader JP)
4. Eject your device

Your Kobo UI (Nickel) will then show the new icon as a new 'book' that launches the new KOReader.

I think that's all. It would be cleanest if you copied the folder after a fresh initial installation (from scratch). It also works with an existing installation, but you may want to delete some files in the new copy, such as crash.log, cache files, history.lua, etc., that don't pertain to your additional installation.

Thanks johnny, thats good news. I should clarify that at the moment I'm just testing out koreader on android to see if it fits my needs, but my questions were indeed pertaining to kobo which is what I intend to install and use it on. Thanks to the information you've provided it looks as though koreader will be suitable for my usage.

I'm afraid I don't know what KFMon is, as of yet I've only played around with the android version. Is it something critical to my intended goal? Let me know if there's anything I need to know about it, Thanks mate

KFMon will be automatically installed to your Kobo if you install KOReader using the One-Click-Install packages provided here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=314220.

KFMon acts as the launcher utility on Nickel (the Kobo GUI) which facilitates opening KOReader like a book. There is also NickelMenu, that adds an extra menu entry on the bottom menu bar on Nickel, which is also included in the OneClickPackages. (My NickelMenu also shows an extra entry for my own secondary KOReader installation and I don't think I had to edit anything extra for that after doing the above KFMon edits, but it's been a while and I don't remember for certain. The above steps will definitely be enough for the new launcher icon to get you started.)

Thanks a lot mate, you've been a big help to me. I'm confident that this tactic will achieve exactly what I'm desiring
