Problem with manually inserting characters in TOC entry

When manually adjusting the TOC, via double-click on some TOC entry and wanting to insert some special character, you cannot use the "insert character" function to enter those specific characters.
Not sure this is intended behavior.
Work around: copy&paste character(s).

Unfortunately because of the way dialogs work in Qt this is not possible to implement. Char select works only with inputting text into controls in the main editor window not in modal dialogs.

Fair enough, Kovid.
Would have been nice, though, to have it available on editing the "comments" field of the "edit metadata" feature, to name another issue. But fortunately, there are work-arounds.

FWIW: I use the no-frills Transtool Utilties->Insert Symbol tray applet to insert frequently used 'special characters' into text boxes such as calibre Comments, MR Messages, Emails etc.

Type that into the WINDOWS search (down by Start)

I thought unlikely to be gone. Surely that works for Calibre? I rarely use windows now.

In most situations the Windows Character Map is overkill and it can't be invoked with a key-sequence without something like AHK, last time I looked the same goes for BabelMap.

The advantage of tray applets (like the Transtools utilities) is that they can be used practically everywhere, without getting caught up in the vagaries of application child windows and dialogue box types… and you don't have to learn how to do essentially the same thing in ten different ways.

You *all* are absolutely right: the Windows 11 character map is also a solution, and due to the fact that calibre is so feature/tool inclusive like an extended swiss-pocketknife I hardly ever use other tooling so I completely forgot about its existence.
Oh well, its the aging process I assume
