Will synchronizing Kobo with new pc erase everything?

My old pc is dead and I bought a new one.

I use Calibre to add books to my Kobo Aura. I have now installede Calibre on my new pc but I haven't connected the Kobo to the new pc yet because I'm afraid of what happens when I sync the new pc with the ebook reader.

Will the synchronization erase all of the books on the Kobo because they're not on my new pc - or will it just the fact and keep them on the Kobo and just synchronize the new books I have put in the folder on my new pc?

No. You can even populate an empty Calibre library. Do use the USB cable and not any of the WiFi methods.

It's send a copy or import a copy. Sync doesn't apply as such to using Calibre in the normal way and via a USB cable.

Do get a 1T USB HDD as a minimal backup system and also use Calibre's built in backup-export tool.

Sorry for the doublepost - after I made the first one I realized I made it in the wrong section of the forum. I didn't know how to delete it because it's acceptance by a moderator was pending. So I made a similar post where I thought it would be appropiate.

And thank you for answering my question and the suggestion to use an external drive for backup.

To continue from what @Quoth mentioned, if you connect your Kobo to calibre and then click on Device, you can select books that you sideloaded which are not in your current calibre library and add them to your library. This can help when your library has been trashed.

Did you make a backup of your calibre settings before your old PC crashed and burned? If so, you can restore the settings. Did you also backup your calibre libraries? Again if you did, you can restore to your new PC.

Even if you didn't, plugging your Kobo into your new calibre installation will not cause you to lose any eBooks on the Kobo or the PC.

You would exit calibre (if you don't, the results can be 'interesting') and copy the old settings over the new ones. To locate your calibre configuration directory, open Preferences => Miscellaneous and then click on the Open calibre configuration directory button.
