Saving Notes and Words
Is there a way to save words and notes in my Kobo Libra, Calibre, or elsewhere? If I delete, the book from the ereader are those notes gone? If I reinstall the book, will they come back again? I side-load my books.

See Calibre here.
Unless you export (Calibre Kobo Utilities or other methods) it's all deleted when you delete an ebook. |

Connect Kobo to PC/Mac /Linux via USB
On Calibre -> Kobo Utilities -> Copy annotations for selected book. (also copies highlights and bookmarks) You can also edit the conf file so an extra menu item is on the context menu for a title. Then there is the option to export annotations for that book as a textfile, which can be later copied via USB and a file manager. The Calibre method is easier. There is also an Annotations Plug in on Calibre which imports the annotations to Calibre column entry, but I find the Kobo Utilities better. I copy & paste into a text editor window open beside source Wordprocessor. There is possibly some method with Calibre & Kobo to copy annotations back to a fresh copy, but inherently that can't work well as the location of the source hightlight may have changed. In general you can save (export) Kindle or Kobo (and some Sony) annotations, but not copy back. |

In the file \.kobo\Kobo eReader.conf, add this:
[FeatureSettings] ExportHighlights=true (The heading "Feature Settings" may already be there.) Make sure the lines have Linux/Mac style line endings (just line feeds, no carriage returns), not Windows style (which has both line feeds and carriage returns). Editors such as NotePad++ (free) can do that. Then, in the Kobo Readers "My Books" setting, you'll find an "Export Annotations" option on the "..." menu for each title. |

![]() All exactly what I would have written except I was too lazy to look it up. I used Notepad++ on Windows and even on WINE, till I changed to KATE on Linux. Also if on Mac, ChromeOS, Linux, BSD etc you have to "view hidden files" or you can't see anything starting with a period. And the \ are / which oddly was an option on some version(s) of DOS just about when DOS got subdirectories! Last edited by Quoth; 11-03-2022 at 03:01 PM. |

If you don't use Calibre, but have NickelMenu installed you can use this script: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=349637

From https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...2&postcount=21
"if you want to backup annotations for epubs, you can backup the contents of the "Digital Editions/Annotations" directory. There will be a file for each epub that has been opened with the annotations in it. These can be restored to the device..." I have previously successfully done this by replacing the newly created annot file with the backed up one after needing to re-checkout an expired library book. The eReader.conf method certainly looks interesting too. Last edited by Tawn; 11-03-2022 at 08:48 PM. |

Works because the ebook is unchanged. It won't work if the Library has got an updated copy, or you edited an ebook, or downloaded a revised copy of a bought or PD eBook.
