Manage Ebook notes

On Amazon Kindle you can highlight text and insert personal notes for an e-book.
Given that the ebook (azw / mobi) has no DRM-protection

1. Is there any way to export notes without using the built-in export-to-mail feature? (E.g. is there a tool to read the files on the kindle containing the notes and export it?)

2. Is there a way to store a book and its notes in an Kindle-readable, but Amazon-independent file format?

Regards

I was also thinking KindleMate but I'm not sure it will perform the second function the OP wants.

If you are on linux, you can try kindleclip.
https://github.com/gwolf/kindleclip
And you may also try the plugin "Annotations" for calibre - you can fetch the annotations from a book to the comment field and you can export the metadata e. g. with help of Copy Metadata.
