What has happened at HathiTrust magazine archives?
Does anybody know what has happened at HathiTrust --- They have changed access rights on [possibly all] magazines, so Full View is only available for magazines 1895 and prior. 1896 issues seem to be Limited Search only [you can ONLY search for words or phrases to see if they occur within the text].
I skimmed through about a dozen magazine archives, and found this situation for UK and US magazines. So it seems you can no longer view or download pages that were published in 1896 or later. I wonder if they have a lawsuit pending or something ??? I am heartbroken --- that site has been a prime source for old short stories and Internet Archive has only quite limited magazine archives. It seems odd as even by Disney standards later than 1895 should be PD.

Welp, looks like I found the answer in their posted policy on copyright --- I surely do wish I could go back in a time machine and see what this page said a couple of weeks ago

But a couple of weeks ago, it said the same thing. Last year was different. https://web.archive.org/web/20200523...ights_database In any case, contrary to the usual situation, it looks like users with US IP addresses have the best access. Quote:

COUNTRY that the IP address belongs to? Dang it!!?? If they can detect the requester's IP, they are capable of applying a filter --- they must just choose not to. I work on a US military base in Japan, and the IP address is Japanese --- but, go figure, Japanese copyright is Life+50. I can only hope for the possibility of international book-making collaborations in the MobileRead team. Last edited by GrannyGrump; 08-22-2021 at 11:35 AM. |

IP addresses ought NEVER to be used for geolocation. It's a lazy, inaccurate and unfair method of Digital Rights Management. IP blocks might in reality be used in a different country to where the "official" look up suggests. Also people can use VPNs.
Indeed Publishing and copyright should ONLY depend on the rules where the publishing is. Anything else is unfair. We used to have a reasonable Berne Convention. Ironically the USA often "pirated" other countries books up to maybe 1960s. Now due to Disney and other big US Corporate lobbyists the USA has the evil DMCA and is exporting abusive Copyright terms as part of any trade agreements. Authors and creators are not benefiting. In British Empire days and even up to the 1950s the USA and UK agreed to secret carve up of various markets based on prior colonialism or conquering. This applied to English Language publishing too, disadvantaging authors and consumers. UK distributors essentially blocked many USA published books and magazines. There is now a publisher driven campaign to make post Brexit UK copyright rules more favourable for sales in UK of the publishers who operate there. It's a mess of protectionism. Meanwhile Amazon grows at the expensive of everyone else in online paper print sales (80%+ in USA), own publishing and English language ebooks (90% + in world) and majority of Audiobooks. Google ignores others copyrights in scanning and YouTube but enforces their own and spends millions in USA, EU and other places on lobbying and supporting front organisations to get what they want. |

I have done a few collaborations with other MR members, but it had never been for the sake of access to source material -- rather, due to shared interest in a specific book, etc.
I feel kind of weird, to contemplate asking other folks to download files for me to work with, but I don't really see another way because I can NOT set up a VPN due to various work policy reasons. Oh, my... ![]() |

Hi Doitsu
Believe it, the IT guy will absolutely NOT help. I will try at our library computer, I am not sure who their ISP is. Maybe I will be lucky. Anyway, a couple of HathiTrust links for magazine archives. For me, any volume 1896 and later displays as "Search Only" Pall Mall magazine Windsor magazine |

Oh, kooooool !!
I just got hold of portableapps package of Opera, which I will see if I can set it up properly on my portable drive. Light at the end of the pitch-black tunnel. Thank you for the suggestion. My hero! |

I have FULL VIEW, too, without using a VPN service. This is on Firefox.
However, I can only download one page at a time, unless I list a member institution (and presumably supply details to verify that fact). My point: Download MAY be crippled. FULL VIEW is not. |
