Calibre 5.19 crashes Macos Catalina
I am using the latest version, 5.19 but I this also happened at 5.18 (I therefore waited for 5.19).
When I select multiple books for Metadownload, it gives an error It can't find any metadata and then I get a crash message too, to be send to Apple. But when I select an individual book (out of that) it can find metadata and processes it. Even when multiple books selected which metadata can be found, it works. So somehow when you select multiple books and when 1 book has no metadata to be found it crashes the app. I used to app for years without any issues like this. ---- Starting job: Download metadata for 2 books Job: "Download metadata for 2 books" failed with error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "calibre/gui2/metadata/bulk_download.py", line 249, in download File "calibre/utils/ipc/simple_worker.py", line 256, in fork_job File "calibre/utils/ipc/simple_worker.py", line 181, in run_job File "calibre/utils/ipc/simple_worker.py", line 116, in communicate calibre.utils.ipc.simple_worker.WorkerError: Failed to communicate with worker process During handling of the above exception, another exception occurred: Traceback (most recent call last): File "calibre/gui2/threaded_jobs.py", line 83, in start_work File "calibre/gui2/metadata/bulk_download.py", line 254, in download Exception: Failed to download metadata. See also screenshots of the Apple message. Any thoughts? Thanks, Etienne |

"Failed to communicate with worker process" oftens means that security software is killing the child process. If you have any running, disable it temporarily and see if it works.

That's almost certainly some security process killing the worker process calibre uses assuming its a vurus because it is contacting multiple websites.

Thank you @ownedbycats, @kovidgoyal
The only security I have is the MacOS Firewall, Lulu Firewall and a raspberry pi with pihole as an ad blocker. Even with all these three turned off I get the error. It only happens with books where it seems that there is no metadata available, other books where it can find metadata work fine. I will wipe/reinstall calibre I think to see if that helps. |

I reinstalled the app (removed it first using AppCleaner).
It works straight out of the box, no re-authorizations for firewalls etc needed. Lost my plugins of course and had to set my kindle email address again, but that is fine. |
