EPUB 3 Books Crashing Pocketbook When Opened
Hello Everyone,

Soon after I started using my Pocketbook Basic Lux 2 I noticed that I wasn't able to fully open and read EPUB 3 protected books on the device. After using the onboard Adobe software to unlock the EPUB 3 DRM my pocketbook crashes and freezes up when I attempt to open the book and I am forced to perform a soft reset to free it from the crash.

I believed that this was software error as the current firmware version cannot properly unlock and render on the screen EPUB 3-protected books. I got in contact with Pocketbook support and they confirmed my suspicions. They also confirmed that the latest firmware for most newer Pocketbook devices includes support for EPUB 3 books. Unfortunately even though they said my current firmware version was up to date the company has no current plans to release any more firmware updates for the Basic Lux 2 including for EPUB 3 support.

I already tried opening the file in question on my computer and it seems that it is still not unlocked completely despite the presented file type as I receive error messages. As I use Linux the Adobe Software for Unlocking DRM files is incompatible with my OS so unlocking and then converting is out of the question even though I have tried in the past to get Adobe Digital Editions working through WINE.

I was wondering if there is any community fixes to this sort of issue or if someone else has had the same or similar problems with their Pocketbook and if they found a solution?

As for solutions. There are community made pocketbook reader apps that can be used as a replacement, and (likely) support epub3. Whether these support DRM/protected content is unknown to me. Examples are 'KoReader' and 'Coolreader'.

Another (illegal) solution is to 'deDRM' them, and convert the books to epub2 using any tool. Again, removing protection is a violation/illegal, but if done nicely (say, deleting library books after expiry date), well... it's up to you. (kinda like the letter vs spirit of the law)

Those don't and afaik won't support hard-DRM contaminated ebooks. The reason for that are some copyright problems (I think).

Pocketbook is using the latest version of RMSDK. That should support ePub 3 and the hardened DRM. Is your Lux 2 fully updated? Are you configured to be able to read DRMed ePub?

PB Basic Lux 2 runs 5.xx firmware (last: 5.17.2173 (February 17, 2021)), which does not support ePub3 at all.

Alternativ reader apps don't support DRM.

Solution: read something else ...

According to the user manual for5.17.2173, the Basic Lux 2 does support ePub with DRM. Also, the Lux 2 has RMSDK. I don't know what version, but RMSDK does not crash with ePub 3.

The solution is to stop using the alternative reading app since it doesn't work properly (if that is the problem).

The support guy was pretty foreign sounding in his response and may have not reiterated to me what he actually meant to say properly but by what I gleamed from it was that the Basic Lux 2 currently doesn't have support for unlocking or reading EPUB 3 books and that the company currently doesn't have any plans to release a firmware update to the particular model to enable such support.

Probably future planned obsolescence on their part but its a bunch of bullcrap if you ask me.

My device is fully updated and it is configured to unlock and read EPUB books as I have been able to unlock and read both regular EPUB and EPUB 2 books that I have bought. On the assumption that no new firmware updates are released for my model in the future I'll get by with the formats that I can read on it. Only it's going to put a serious hamper on what I can read on the device in the future as most new books and many old ones will be put on EPUB 3 or its successor.

Back to trips to the bookstore or long delivery waits...

I don't know. I wouldn't know how to find out as I'm not technical when it comes to e-readers. My last working e-reader many, many years ago was a first generation Kindle and I know that it uses an entirely different DRM format that is proprietor to Amazon itself so I don't have much experience with the ins and outs of Adobe-based DRM software.

Turns out I can read the EPUB 3 ebook no problem and no crashes at anytime. What does that say about the books that I have been trying to read after buying? Does my problem now have something to do with the on-board Adobe ADE software that unlocks the DRM file rather then the onboard Pocketbook Software?

We can say for sure that ePub 3 does not crash your Lux 2.

How did you download the ePub 3 that caused the crash?
