Successfully performed Jailbreak on Kindle Oasis 3 today; KOReader does not launch
I successfully performed jailbreak on my Kindle Oasis 3 today, however, KOReader does not launch. It shows "Starting KOReader..." but it does not start.
Here is the crash.log: Code:

Thanks NiLuJe! Took a look at that page and the device.lua file Frenzie noted...
I added serial of my device, "0WM", to the end of the line code for koa2_set local koa2_set = Set { "0LM", "0LN", "0LP", "0LQ", "0P1", "0P2", "0P6", "0P7", "0P8", "0S1", "0S2", "0S3", "0S4", "0S7", "0SA", "0WM" } and KOReader launched. I don't know anything about this language, so I'm sure there is more to it and I look forward to official support. But for now, KOReader launched and I'm reading my book! Thanks! |

I could not connect USB mode from within KOReader like I can with the Libra. I tried 3 times. Light would go off, but then be stuck and I had to restart the device by long pressing the power button.
The gyro is super sensitive when moving the device in the left direction. I mean barely moving in that direction and the screen flips. Moving to the right direction the gyro seems to behave correctly. There is no warmth adjustment for the frontlight. One time when trying to exit KOReader, I pressed "Exit" and it froze. I had to restart the device by long pressing the power button. I may have been just pressing menu items too fast. The buttons seem to work correctly. I have top button set for page forward and bottom bottom page back, and the buttons work correctly when I flip the device to use with left hand. |

USBMS is not supposed to work on Kindles
![]() I had forgotten that the only difference between the KOA2 and KOA3 is effectively the amber LEDs, so that makes sense, too. As for the rest, that'll require someone with the device and shell access to investigate ![]() |

It shouldn't? IIRC, that menu is hidden behind a capcheck: https://github.com/koreader/koreader...le.lua#L38-L49

Sorry about that, I just assumed it did. There is no USB mode menu item on the Kindle. I forgot that in the Libra it had to be enabled.
I bought the KOA3 back when it first came out in 2019. It's a really nice reader... hardware wise...the size, the warm light feature, the buttons, beautiful screen. Software wise it's okay, except the most important features... fonts, line spacing, margins! Since I could not jailbreak it back then, I really tried to make it work using the stock software, but I'm super picky! The fonts not dark enough, and fonts actually changed appearance (to the worst) when using the software bold feature. Font sizes were either too small or too big, no inbetween sizes that was comfortable. The included fonts are awful and I used a custom font, got it to look okay by manipulating it in a font program. Then after one of the updates (it's on 5.13.2 now) my custom font that looked pretty good suddenly did not. It rendered horribly. Letter heights became uneven. It got to where I regretted buying this device and I put it away and bought the Libra and put KOReader on it. The Libra is an excellent device, but I just have a little issue with the buttons. My hands are small and my thumb lays comfortably between the two buttons. Only you can't press the very bottom edge of the top button to page forward or the very top edge of the bottom button to page back... you have to press more in the center and top of the top button and more to the center and bottom of the bottom button. So not as comfortable for me. Whereas on the Kindle, I can press the edges of the buttons, so I don't have the problem and it's more comfortable. When I saw the new jailbreak method, I dug out the Kindle and performed the jailbreak and put KOReader on it. It's absolutely beautiful! I appreciate you all for the hard work you put in KOReader and that you share it. It is superior to the Kindle software! Thank you! |

I'm so sorry for the confusion! It's me not remembering the proper procedure.
I have not used my Libra in a few months, but remembered that I could connect the usb cable while in KOReader instead of exiting out each time to connect the cable. So I just connected the usb cable while in KOReader on the Kindle expecting it work. What I forgot was that on the Libra I had to select "Start USB storage" menu item. KOReader on Kindle does not have that menu item. |

Yeah, the onplug hook is obviously behind the same capcheck

how was the experience?
hi, how was the overall experience running koreader on your kindle oasis? any major bugs? and on what firmware you jailbroken your kindle?
Im interested in buying kindle oasis as well, but never used a kindle before. Do you think jailbrekaing a kindle is worth it? my use case scenario is mainly just reading epubs and pdfs (pdf auto cropping on koreader just too good, and my main reason to jailbreak a kindle is just for koreader) Last edited by huronhorn; 04-19-2021 at 01:59 PM. |
