Yes/No and Rating Toggles

I find the yes/no and rating toggles a lot easier-to-see and a bit easier-to-edit than text.

But I still often have to try each toggle 2x, sometimes 3x times to get them to stay where I've selected them.

Step one, click,

Step 2, select desired value,

Step 3, unclick,

Step 4, move mouse to next.

Step 5, see that it's switched since I unclicked,

Step 6, move back...

Is there some trick I'm missing here? I got a new mouse, but still have the same problem.

If editing in the book list: open the cell with F2; use the up and down arrow keys to get desired value; press enter (or tab) to accept the current value. Much less fiddlesome than picking and poking with a mouse.

I don't have that issue, but I'd try keyboard navigation to see if it may be a mouse issue.

Click on a cell in the book list, then use arrow/tab keys until the column is selected. Press F2. Then use Y, N, and U keys to set them as Yes, No, and Undefined. (The last one was added in a relatively recent update—I'm the one who requested it—so it may not be available if you're using an older version.)

I have a similar, somewhat random, problem, and I have not figured out what triggers it. It usually happens when I click on the rating column for a book, select a rating, then click on the menu icon for the Reading List plugin to select either "Add this book to list" or "Remove this book from list." Most of the time, my newly-selected rating will disappear. I have gotten used to selecting my rating, moving to a different row, then reselecting the original row before doing anything else with it. It doesn't always happen, but it happens enough that I always click on another row after selecting a rating, just to make sure it sticks.

I don't understand the sequence.
  • At step 1, to be able to select a value you must have already opened the editor for the cell. How did you do that? With F2? With a click?
  • What does step 4 mean? Move the mouse to what "next"? Are you clicking on something?
What version of calibre are you running, and on what operating system? Do you have any accessibility aids turned on that affect the mouse?

I am using Calibre 4.23 on MacOS 10.14.6.

I am using Scroll+ because I am too clumsy for MacOS's narrow scrollbars and because I have suffered tendon injuries trying to use wheels, etc. It scrolls if I hold the middle button down.

So for step 1, I'm clicking on the cell, the toggle pops up. For step 4, having unclicked one cell, I'm moving to the next one I'm trying to click. But it doesn't really depend on step 4. Sometimes I select undecided and get no, or select no and get yes. I don't know why.

I also sometimes have trouble with text, where I delete something, and Calibre opens an autocomplete list and picks the 1st result from the list, so I have to delete that, too. I think that's due to mouse movement. e.g. pressure from the cord or the pad.

I have coordination issues and repetitive stress injuries, and going back-and-forth between the mouse and the left side of the keyboard is a lot more work than just using the mouse for a bit and then just using the keyboard for a bit. Also while the arrow keys can be alright within a few columns and rows, they aren't practical over medium or long distances. While page down isn't practical over medium or short distances.

The problem is that Qt, calibre's GUI toolkit, specifically allows menus to be activated while editing a widget. You can select a menu item and it can do 'things' without opening a dialog or otherwise taking keyboard focus, leaving the editor open. If one of those 'things' resets/changes the information for selected book then the editor will be abandoned and edits will be lost. Avoiding this behavior is outside of my Qt-fu. As far as I can tell calibre doesn't know it is happening.

Workarounds:
  • press Enter
  • press left or right arrow
  • click on a different column on the same book

I have to bow out of this one. I don't know anything about Macs, and especially how Qt handles Mac pseudo-events. Sorry ...

P.S. With the text autocomplete, I've encountered the same problem when just using the keyboard, if the mouse moves.

Thanks, chaley. At least I understand why it happens now.
