Safe to upgrade to Calibre 5.8.1?

I remember updating to 5.x.x and my apprentice Alf plugins would no longer work. So I downgraded to 4.23 and everything started working again but now that my Kobo readers are using the latest firmware I get the "driver not supported error" and for some reason the last time I uploaded some books they didn't seem to show up on the "My Books" section under "most recent". I'm wondering if that's due to the fact that the Kobo drivers aren't supported in my older version of Calibre. So what I'm wondering is, can I now get the new version of Calibre at still have control over my books?

The Kobo firmware version support in a particular calibre version is the same as always. It will probably be safe. If you have doubts, look for the thread discussing that firmware version in the Kobo forum to check. And in this case, it is definitely safe to follow the instructions in the warning message.

And even without that, there should be no issues sending books to the device. The actual send is independent on the firmware version. There is something done, but, that does not affect the book getting onto the device. When you eject the device, it should see them and import them. When problems like this are reported, my suggestion is to make sure the book is actually on the device before ejecting it, and to watch for the importing screen after the device is ejected. If it doesn't appear, you need to look at the file name and were the books are. If it does appear, and the books are not shown, then it is usually an problem with the book.

There is a pre-release DeDRM plugin version 7.0.3. It's main purpose is to fix things to remove the DRM from PDF. But there are other code changes for Python 3. I've used the 7.0.1 version and it seems to work with ePub, Mobi, KF8. I've not tested it with any other format

So the answer is Calibre 5.8.1 is safe to install.

Ok after updating to 5.8.1 and then trying it didn't work but I consulted with Apprentice Alf for the latest version and now things work fine.

That's because the version you had was not compatible with Python 3. The new version is.
