How can I update the dictionaries without being connected to the internet?
The latest firmware made some changes to the dictionaries. How can I update the dictionaries without being connected to the internet?

You can't.
If the point is not turning on WiFi, you might be able to use Kobo desktop application. You would probably need to select the dictionaries desired and then connect to a PC running the desktop application, and, maybe it will download the dictionaries. But, how this is managed has changed, so it might not work now. |

You can't? I was under the impression that https://kbdownload1-a.akamaihd.net/e...dicthtml-*.zip were the new dictionaries which can be downloaded to .kobo/dict.

![]() Yes, that can be done. But, for most people turning in WiFi and letting the device do it is a much more sensible thing to do. I'd prefer to offer suggestions like that once I know why people don't want to use the device in the way it was designed to be used. |

Do you have to sync in order to update the dictionary or is it enough to jut have WiFi on and use the dictionary?

But, the question isn't about syncing, it's about having an active internet connection. |

Why lie? Just say "Before I answer you I want to know why you want to do this." Sure, it feels stupid to say such a sentence, but at least it's a sincere attitude. Say it clearly: "I want to see the invoice of the shop where you bought the device." Now, please, answer another question. On which website, other than this, can I find normal assistance for the use of a device without being forced to deal with people who have lost touch with reality? ps1: Kobo distributes the "desktop application" for windows and mac only, while I only use linux pc, and for mysterious reasons, that certainly hide a criminal attitude, I don't want to use wine. ps2: You're an idiot. |

Why is it possible to update the firmware without being connected and it is not possible for dictionaries? Thieves install dictionaries but are disinterested in firmware?

@vFbjgBDhV You need to learn to behave. Calling someone an idiot is not going to endear yourself.
Also, you have to learn when someone is making a joke. You asked how to manage dictionaries without being connected to the Internet. You can't. The Kobo or the computer has to be connected. So a joke was made and you got upset and went overboard. I highly suggest you apologize and kind of start over. |

Yes, it did when I read this post.
And for the record, I was making a joke with @geek1011. A joke I considered making to you, but, it obviously would have fallen very flat. Quote:

You replied: "you can't". Then you replied to geek: "Yes, that can be done. But, ... I'd prefer to offer suggestions like that once I know why people ... " So you lied to my question thinking that I should be the one to explain why I asked it. You didn't joke, you lied. You are not the one who is "actually trying to answer" my question. You knew the answer and, being able to shut up, you preferred to write to lie. For me the question ends here. |

For the dictionaries, again, Kobo do not officially support sideloading dictionaries. And again, they do not publish the URLs to the dictionaries. What @geek1011 posted was something he worked out. And it is only useful if you know the actual names of the dictionaries. Which aren't that hard to work out. (The easiest is to turn on the WiFi, download the dictionaries and record the names.) Both of those mean that I think it is so much easier to just turn on the WiFi and sync. And if I can't do that, then it probably means I am somewhere without any sort of internet connection that I can use, so I wouldn't be able to download these files anyway. That doesn't make me an idiot. Lazy I'll cop to. Of course, what you might really have been asking is can you get other dictionaries and use them. Again, Kobo doesn't officially support this, but, the firmware does have unofficial support for custom dictionaries. This is widely discussed in this forum. Lastly, Kobo do not own these dictionaries. They license them from someone else. Making them available in any way except through the firmware or their applications would probably break the terms of that licence. |
