Disable DST Daily Time savings
Hi, All,
could you please help me to disable DST, I have to change on all my KOBOs time twice a year, and it's quite annoying. Thank you! |

That sounds like you are using the wrong timezone. When setting the date and time, you should enter a city in your timezone that also has the correct DST settings. Ideally, you would use a nearby city, but, you might need to look at a map and find one in roughly the same longitude and experiment to check what settings you get.
Where are you? Maybe someone can suggest a city. And I am curious about what you are doing. Are you in an area that has DST but don't want the clock to reflect that? I'd find that confusing. |

Do device time settings recognize addresses that are in a location that doesn't observe Daylight Savings Time? (For example, the state of Arizona in the US doesn't do Daylight Savings)

It should. I get a different time if I select Sydney, currently in daylight savings, and Brisbane, which doesn't do daylight savings. The device shows UTC +11 and +10 respectively. It does of course depend on how good the list used for this is. I would expect a US state to be correct.

Perhaps if @Hamsky supplied a location, it might have made this discussion a bit more useful.

The other thing worth knowing is what f/w level is being used

I am living in Ho Chi Minh, but i think it would be convenient to have something like checkbox Enable/disable DST, would be nice.
Or just tell me which city does not use DST forever and i will use it. ![]() |

You might try Phnom Penh though that may not help since neither country is currently officially supported by Kobo.

In any case, I'd find it far to confusing to have one clock not match the others around me. I'd always be an hour early or late. And I hate time/date arithmetic to much to want to do it all the time. |

And it escapes me what the problem is. You state you are in Ho Chi Minh. That does not use daylight savings. If you use that as the city, the device should not make any changes the non-existent daylight savings. And if it is you should report the bug to Kobo so that they can fix it. If you still want to poke around. The device runs a custom Linux build. There is probably an environment variable that can be set. I remember playing with one a long time ago to try and get the daylight savings changes right. But, I haven't needed to do that for years as everything seems to get it right. |

They're almost certainly using the IANA Timezone Database. Even with a highly customised Linux distro like Kobo use it's just not worth re-inventing this particular wheel. Also the give-away is the the "choose a city" approach which is how the tzdb is organized.
The environment variable davidfor is probably thinking of is TZ which you would set to GMT+7. But then you would need to set it and (re-)launch Nickel. Unless the Kobo developers have done something very strange that should cause the time to reflect your timezone. Honestly though it's much easier to set this stuff through the Kobo settings. Ho Chi Minh shows up in my Kobo Clara HD settings (fw 4.24.15676). As do Phnom Penh and Vientiane. They're all +7 timezones without DST. What does your timezone show up as at the moment if you go to settings->date and time? |

There is no such thing, as city on both my Kobos (see attachment), only date and time, and this is RIGHT!
Just one checkbox "disable DST" - would be perfect there! Anyway logically speaking, I SHOULD NOT supply my city to a device like this (book reader, calculator, cooker, blender etc) ![]() |
