Freezing Cybook
Does anyone else find their Cybook Gen3 freezes? Do I just need to load up some new software? I've been finding when I've turned it on its frozen a few times at the first screen though when I press the reset button on the back it works after I turn it on again.
Just wondering if anyone else knows about this and whether I should send it back, which I really don't want to or whether there's already a "fix" available for this problem. Thanks |

Mine has started freezing like that; but I only get it when I turn it on the first time after charging.
I did recently update the firmware; the unit didn't freeze before that - but whether the freezing is the result of the upgarde, I'm not sure. It's not a big deal, since the reset gets it going again - as long as it doesn't presage anything more serious. ![]() (P.S. just remember - whatever it is - the warranty won't cover it. ![]() |

Never happened to me. Were you trying to upload a large PDF file or something that the Cybook can't handle?

My mum has recently got a cybook and hers keeps freezing on the first screen. Only done it once for me so far but i wondered if anyone else on here had had this problem. A reset normally sorts it out but even so it could become a bigger problem.

All I can tell you is that I had a couple off freezes in the old firmware version on PDF's he couldn't handle.
But now with the latest firmware PDF handling is much better and I haven't had a freeze since the update (which is exactly 1 month ago). I must say that for 95% of the time I only read mobi-files and the mobi-reader on the cybook is very stable (as is the dictionary support). So no complaints from me (knock on wood). ![]() |

Perhaps worth doing a "chkdsk" on both the internal and SD card (if you're using one) file systems to see if they've become corrupted.

I had quite a number of freezes with the previous version of the firmware (708), and I wasn't the only one in this situation.
After updating to the current version (796), I've had only one freeze at boot, just after the update. fleaaaaaa, you might want to check your firmware version (Menu button on the library, then Advanced, then About, and check what's written under "Boo Reader")? Sparrow, when you say that you recently updated the firmware, was it 708 or 796 ? |

Check which drive units your Cybook and SD-card has been assigned? Forinstance, F and G which mine usallay is named, once you figured that out open a command prompt, by clicking start and select run, and enter cmd in the run prompt. Inte tha scary "black hole" that opens, you type in chkdsk X: where you replace X with the drive letters for your Cybook, so for instance, chkdsk F: |

I too have experienced a system freeze during the boot-up initial screen. I re-seated the sd card and reset, then all was ok for a week or two, after which the same symptom started recurring.
As an experiment, I removed the sd card completely a couple of months ago, and since then I have had no recurrence. Fortunately I have the 512MB version, with plenty of space remaining. I have also taped over the empty slot to avoid too much dust entry. |

The only time mine freezes up is when using an old, slow SD card (it came with a camera in about 2005). It would also be reluctant to find the card on boot-up. changed the card to a new one & no problems

Interesting thread. Mine is absolutely fine - bought June this year direct from Bookeen, never freezes - but my wife's (September this year from WHSmith) freezes a lot; as others have said, a simple reset does the job, but it shouldn't be necessary really, should it?
As an aside, are firmware updates really worth the effort? Never bothered with mine, and with the wife's at least we know how to resolve the issue... Cheers, Pete. |
