Walmart Wasteland with You, Too?

Yesterday I noticed that the local Walmart had finally put the Kobo Clara out of its misery and retired it somewhere. It was crunched in a vice with curving display, practically weeping from abuse, but they retired the entire kobo ereader section while they were at it, including the ebook cards. It doesn’t bode well for the Kobo/Walmart partnership.

I can’t say that the partnership has been a good one. Walmart never seemed to put much care into any of the displays that I saw at the three different Walmart’s I noticed them at. But buying a Kobo from Walmart sure beat waiting for it to arrive by pony from [Kobo]. Online sales excelled, and I like purchasing Walmart gift cards for my daughter to use. It hasn’t all been terrible.

What do the Walmart displays look like for you? Have they started to disappear in your neck of the woods?

I ordered my Kobo Aura H2O the day before Thanksgiving (Wednesday) from Chapters in Canada. It arrived on the next Sunday. That was only four days.

I checked online several times before (and after, out of curiosity) I ordered my Clara from Walmart last year. Never saw that there were any Kobo readers available in any stores near me.

Yes, I have a Clara. No longer have the KA1 LE. Shopping from Kobo has always taken two weeks for me. Indigo was faster. Walmart fastest. Three days from order to pickup in the store.

As for the partnership being temporary, that’s the first I’ve heard of it.

My store had a display model, but no placards to bring up to the register, so I ordered online.

My Walmart never had Kobos on display, though there were those book gift cards.

I recently bought a Clara from the Walmart website when it was on sale for $99, and it arrived in two-days with free shipping. I also managed to snag a discounted sleep cover from my local store. Come to think of it, that may be the first time I've ever laid eyes on a Kobo product at Walmart.

As long as Walmart continues to sell Kobos on their website, that's good enough for me. (Is it good enough for Kobo though? Who can say?)

The post office is open on the Friday and Saturday after US Thanksgiving. Mail moves like normal on those days.

From Wiki: "On January 31, 1957, the Governor General of Canada Vincent Massey issued a proclamation stating: "A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed – to be observed on the second Monday in October."

The first official annual Thanksgiving in Canada was on Nov. 6, 1879. The first recorded Thanksgiving in Canada was in 1578 though the indigenous people held fall harvest celebrations well before that. Knowing that you have enough stored food to make it to the next growing season without starving is a good reason for celebration. In 1908, the date was moved to a Monday. The 1957 proclamation was to fix the date on the second Monday in October. By then, for most Canadians, any religious aspects to the day were faded memories.

Takes me back to writing a paper on Thanksgiving celebrations around the world in first year university.
