how do I download this book?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08242PXMT
My usual procedure is using the Content and Devices web page and clicking on the 3 dots button and selecting Download for USB but that isn't working. I get an error about not having a compatible device. The format is "Print Replica". In the list "Available on these devices" it lists the various Fire devices, Kindle for Android, as well as Kindle for the PC, but not Kindle ereaders. I have Kindle for Android installed and it shows up in my list of devices on my Content and Devices page. I can open the book on Kindle for Android. Is extracting it from the Kindle app on Android an option? Or is there some other way? |

I suppose I could install Kindle for PC and go that route. My goal is to add the book to my Calibre library and have Apprentice Alf's drm remover do its stuff.

It's really stupid, like MS calling things that were not x86 compatible Windows, Windows.
Anything that doesn't work on real ereader should have a marketing name that doesn't include "Kindle". Marketing departments! I first encountered this a couple of years ago and specially installed Kindle for PC to download the book. Also the Self Publisher didn't understand ebooks. It would have been absolutely fine as a regular ebook, but he insisted it had to match the paper exactly. Shouldn't be sold as an eBook, but Digital Replica and it's a re-invention of PDF. Extracting stuff from proprietary Android apps in general seems awkward. Can you even find it in storage when you mount it? And unless you export it as an RTF or something and build a new ebook, it won't work on a regular Kindle. I went through that loop on the PC app. |

If the eventual goal is to “disinfect” the ebook, it’ll be hard to do on Kindle for Android (probably requires rooting).
Just use Kindle for PC but you will likely need version 1.17. |

@Quoth; Ok, thanks.
I hadn't looked at Apprentice Alf's page in ages and from what it says it looks like Kindle for PC is the best option, except there's some rigmarole with needing to install an old version of that app. Just out of curiosity I'm wondering how bad it is if I use the current version and try using whatever ebook it downloads; he says that the KFX it downloads doesn't convert well to EPUB. But I always clean up the formatting from downloaded Amazon books after converting them to EPUB so perhaps it's not so bad. In any event I'm not going to bother with this book; I get lists of free Kindle books every day and my queue of books to read is growing by leaps and bounds and one less book won't kill me. I was just surprised since it's never happened before. |

One solution is to buy a cheap Kindle that supports KF8 and then you can download KF8 eBooks from Amazon and remove the DRM.

If you have already bought the book, just install the latest Kindle for PC, the latest DeDRM, and give it a go. |

For Kindle textbooks the best thing to do is download the book using Kindle for PC/Mac. Use an older, pre-KFX, version or a newer version with KFX disabled in order to get the book in AZW4 format. Then import that into calibre and use the KindleUnpack plugin to extract the embedded PDF file.
There is a KFX equivalent of print replica. It also includes embedded PDF, but it is more complicated to extract it from that format. |

EDIT: Reading some of the other responses I see my "explanation" (so to speak) was too simplistic. Last edited by rcentros; 07-21-2020 at 06:53 PM. |

Print Replica hasn't replaced Topaz. Topaz books are reflowable. Print Replica are not.
