Install the 64-bit version of Calibre in place of the 32-bit version. The 32-bit version is limited in the amount of memory it can access.

That I do not know. But given that the 32-bit version doesn't have enough memory for your task, I would suggest the 64-bit release even if it's not portable.

How is the OP gonna force portable to be 64 bit? (I assume there is a reason for using portable)
All normal methods of updating would go BYE (and that assumes the OP is someone who could make the 64 bit Portable install work)

BUT
Is this error when Starting Calibre?
Memory errors usually happen on Conversion Jobs, not startup or Check Library (the maintenance task)

Maybe it depends on how larger the library is. I don't know of a 64-bit portable version. That's why I'm saying to install the normal 64-bit version.

But try a reboot first and see if that fixes the problem. If not, the only thing to try is the full 64-bit non-portable version of Calibre.

I'm wondering if updating his DeDRM plugins might help. His versions are horrendously out of date. Removing his current versions and replacing them with the latest from Apprentice Alf/Apprentice Harper (google those two names).

The Inept Epub DeDRM 0.1.7 plugin dates back to 2011 as do most of the others in use. If nothing else, the newer version only needs one plugin instead of 5 or 6 of them.

@Duom: How big is your library? The error is actually being caused by something the Clean Comments plugin does when calibre triggers a library change. This is done during the library check. But, I can only think that the error is happening due to a large library.

The code the plugin doesn't seem to be needed. I'll talk to the author about it.

Making a 64bit Portable isn't difficult, assuming you have 64bit Calibre installed. Just copy everything in C:\Program Files\Calibre2 over what is in '<Calibre Portable dir>\Calibre'

And you have a 64bit Calibre portable. That's how I do it; my metadata.db is too large for 32bit, and my 'library directories' are essentially a full Portable install (with the libraries inside it), so that my backups are a standalone setup when needed.

Even if that works, you cannot update the portable version without updating the non-portable version. So it's a lot easier to just forget the portable version for 64-bit. The configuration direactory for the 32-bit portable version can be copied to the configuration directory for the 64-bit version to keep all the plugins and the configuration settings.

My portable setup is just to have a self-contained backup that's usable as is. But that being the goal, a 32bit version wouldn't be useful to me, as it can't handle my library. And I have a normal 64bit install that I use to work with my libraries anyway, so copying over the program directory is little extra effort.

The main reason I keep a portable version around is for the 3.48 viewer. Mostly for troubleshooting dodgy ePubs that don't render properly in the 4.xx viewer.

Any ePub that won't render in the 4.20 viewer are chock full of errors that need to be fixed.

They do render, they just look weird in the 4.20 viewer. Most of the time I get it sorted out by doing an ePub > ePub convert thankfully.
