small (5") e-reader rec?
ok, giving it more thought, I'd really like a 5" basic e-reader. I like the portability, and just need a basic epub reader with front light, if it exists.
What I DO want: e-ink, 5" (or 4.5"?), front light. What I DON'T want/need: SD card (ebooks don't take up much storage!!), touchscreen (ok if it has one tho), audio, dictionary, notes, etc. So, does a simple small epub e-reader with front light exist? if so, please point me in that direction! Thx!! |

There were several of them in the past but today they are all gone, being replaced with Smart phones that can have an eReader app.

Thx, but not really a 'replacement' IMO! No comparison between e-ink and active screens. oh, and... darn!

There is one older style 4.3" eink sold on Ebay, it's a 600 x 800 screen. Probably no touch, it confusingly claims to be eink and LCD, but it's likely eink
Search 4.3inch 8GB Mini E-Ink Screen It's poor value at about €60 plus import VAT / Duties /Tax depending on location. I have 2.25" Palm LCD, Sony 5" eink PRS350, 6" from Kindle and Nook (Keyboard, PW3, Simple Touch), 6.8" Kobo H2O original and 7" Kobo Libra. The Libra and cover does fit in my jacket pocket, it also fits in an old zip-up writing case , which also just fits my coat pocket. The Sony 5" isn't that much smaller than the PW3, and lot harder to read on. Avoid older than the PSR350 in S/H. The Kobo Mini seems later, but bulkier using a similar or the same 5" screen? |

If Kobo made a new Mini with a Clara-style screen, I would stand in line to get one.

I have to agree that e-ink is a lot better for reading than an LCD or Amoled display. However I now do about 90% or more of my reading on my phone because the screen is good enough and the size is perfect. Better yet it lives in my shirt pocket and it's just always there.
I've found that it doesn't bother my eyes as long as I take a break for about a minute every 20 or 30 minutes. This began when I started putting books on my phone for my many visits to doctor's offices. I'm 79 now and they're sort of home away from home these days. I'd find myself sitting on the porch and get the urge to read and it was easier to take my phone from my shirt pocket than to get up and find my Kindle. Finally I decided to experiment, reading exclusively on my phone for a month. I did and I haven't been tempted to go back to the Kindle. I did all this right after I got my new Paperwhite so I do read on it some out of a sense of duty. But mostly I read on my phone. Barry |

(The last picture is of the PRS-300, a Kobo Aura 2 and the PRS-350. The PRS-350 is small and nice, but no front light.) Also, this shows it's possible to have nice fonts on the PRS-300, but you have to embed them — this one is using Constantia.) |

True, I should have compared it to a Mini. Minis are the smallest, though the PRS-350 "feels" sleeker and is a bit thinner.
I've put up some more pictures comparing the 5" readers to the "Clara" (Tolino Shine 3). As usual, the pictures are not all that great. EDIT: The last picture shows that the Clara (Shine 3) is about the same size as the 5" PRS-300 and EZReader Pocket Pro. (The Clara is a bit thinner.)
