problem with cover download
Cover download is hanging. This happened with both 4.9 and 4.10.1 (for Windows), both before and after I updated the version. Is this possibly a server issue? I've never seen this problem before. Usually if it's not finding a cover it stops after 10-15 seconds, but now it's just running and running. I've tried it with several types of books, fiction, non-fiction, OOC and new.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, do you know the cause & possible solution? |

Seems to be OK here. What are your download sources?

I use everything from Amazon to B&N to fantasticfiction, google books etc. It usually pops up at least one suggestion in a few seconds.

Did you update Calibre recently? Sometimes a new version of Calibre gets flagged by a 3rd party AV software and you can't do anything until you clear Calibre in that program.
Edited to add: Sometimes it not even 3rd party but the bleeding stuff provided by MS, Defender I think it's called now? |

If your AV has an issue with Calibre multiple times, dump it as it's not doing you any good. Yes, the OP updated his Calibre recently as 4.10.1 was released on Friday. |

I haven't needed to exclude calibre, or anything else, from MS's security software since I Installed Win 7 RC build 7100 in May 2009 - i.e. more than a decade ago. A major benefit in ditching XP was that I could also ditch 3rd party AVs - which were always a PITA as far back as Peter Norton's original c**p. Has it ever found any malware? Yes a couple of times, notably a Trojan in one of AVG's products that their own and most other AV products missed! IMO a lot of the false positives, spurious blockages etc raised by 3rd party security offerings are put there to convince users that they're actually doing something useful. All I see from Defender (Jon, in some places it's still branded as such) is a silent notification message every few days to let me know how many 'nothing found' scans it has done since the last notify - it's usually three or four; I could suppress the messages if I wanted to. I'm virtually certain this has nothing to do with AV since I've changed nothing in that setup between my last use of Calibre and the one today. I did think it might have been something in build 4.9, so finished the update to 4.10.1 but had the same issue.
Will keep trying to see if it goes away. Meanwhile, if anyone else experiences this I'll be interested to hear about it. Not that I can help, or anything. |

Is it possible that you are waiting for the cover chooser dialog? It may have drifted off screen (known to happen). Alt+space M A bunch of left arrows might bring it into view |

It was definitely a HANG, with the cover download screen showing but an infinite bunch of little rotating circles supposedly attempting to connect, which lasted at least 5 minutes (I got tired of waiting). No drift that I noticed. I've had drift when updating versions, but never with cover download.
However, it seems to be back to normal today -- I've just successfully tested it on several items that didn't work over the weekend. Strange issue, but it seems to have gone away. Thanks to all of you who attempted to identify the issue, I do appreciate your ideas. |
