Saving Reading History

Is there any way to save reading history of side-loaded kepubs?
My Clara wouldn't connect to Calibre last night (database error) and I had to Log Out/Log In again to fix it. Obviously this has deleted all my reading history and I'm wondering if there's a better way round this or some way to save my history as I go along? My device has only side-loaded Kepubs on it and I use Calibre to manage it.
Thanks

I think the easiest way is setting up Calibre to make database backups, that you can then restore whenever something like this happens.

My Kobo Utilities plugin for calibre can do this. It can store the reading status of books on the device whenever you connect to calibre. Or on demand as needed. You can then restore the reading position to the device after a reset of some sort, or to another Kobo device.

The plugin can also do a backup of the database and other important files. This can be restored after a problem to minimise the lost of status.
