Books Deleting Themselves
I plugged my Kindle PW5 into a different laptop to normal, to charge up. I turned wifi on to download something, then turned airplane mode back on. All of a sudden books started disappearing from my device, on their own. I have no idea what is going on.

If you saw books suddenly disappear when you turned wifi off, this just means that your device was set to see ALL, rather than just DOWNLOADED. You were just seeing the books you have in your Amazon account which you haven't yet downloaded to your kindle. With wifi off, you can no longer see them.
If this is the case, just switch wifi back on and download the books. Or, if you want copies of the books on your computer, go to Amazon via your computer. Go to my devices etc, then in the list of books you've bought, on the far right side you'll see an option to Transfer Via Usb. This will send the books to your computer to be sideloaded to your kindle. This way, you'll have a copy of the book on your computer just in case Amazon ever do get Big Brother-ish. EDIT: I've just realised you're not a newbie, so this is probably not the issue. I'll leave this post for anyone new to ereaders who may have this issue. |

A Kindle reverting to an earlier state is often a sign of a failure of the storage chip.
Add some books and then restart the Kindle. If they disappear then the memory is fried. Last edited by jhowell; 04-27-2022 at 10:19 PM. |

The books disappeared when I was on the 'Downloaded' view. It was after I turned wifi off. I'll have to add books back onto the device when I get my laptop with its Calibre library back from repair to see if the memory is indeed fried.

Another possibility is that the laptop you connected mounted the Kindle storage and some program on the laptop deleted the book files.
If they disappeared while online it could be a sign that those books were deleted from your account at some point and Amazon is cleaning up your device to match. |

I think the laptop theory is more plausible, as the books deleted are still available to download again. Given this is a different laptop from usual that seems more likely. Thanks, and will now just charge from a wall plug instead to be on the safe side.
